Upcoming Event: Women's Basketball versus Countdown to Craziness on October 3, 2025 at 7 p.m.

11/5/2009 9:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
Reaction to the game:
"Great to get started, great to get the season started and get after it as a team. Good to have an opponent to execute and do things. I thought there were some really good things out there on the floor, a million things to improve on but a great start. We are looking forward to the film and learning from the film some more things."
On the improvements in the offense:
"I try to run the ball more effectively. We are trying to do different things with different sets and we are trying to share the ball more. Make the game more simple. We you look at the balance scoring attack that was exhibited today, that is very important. That's very dangerous when you have different people that can score. So the key is to get the ball to them in the best place for them."
On starting the season:
"Everyone was excited about a practice but I was more ready for the games to start. So its nice to kind of get rolling. It makes the year go by faster, which is bittersweet with it being my senior year but it's nice to finally get started. I'm looking forward to the season coming up."
On first game as a Duke Lady Blue Devil:
"It was great to finally get the opportunity to start games. I was really excited and its all great for me. I know I have to work on a lot of things but I like the way we work and the way we play. I can really fit in this game and I really like this game. So I am going to continue to improve to fit into this game."
Wingate Head Coach Barbara Nelson
On playing in Cameron:
"Every kid that grows up in North Carolina watches ACC basketball and dreams about getting to play in places like Cameron Indoor Stadium. You see the fans jumping, you see it on TV, and it's exciting. We were excited to be here, and even after taking the thrashing we're still excited that we got a chance to be here, to play on this floor and play against a team as great as Duke is. I thought Duke's players were gracious, I thought the staff was gracious, and it's been a wonderful experience."
Thoughts on the game:
"I thought we played hard. I thought Duke's size was certainly a factor. Their size, their strength and quickness, and trying to break their press, those kinds of things. But I felt like we played hard, I felt like we never quit, like we were battling them every possession as if it were a five or ten point game instead of looking up and it being a sixty point game. I'm really pleased with that from our standpoint. As far as the Duke players are concerned, there's no wonder they're number six in the nation, and I just wish Coach McCallie and her staff and her players all the luck. Hopefully it will be a great year for them, and hopefully this year for us this will teach us to be a little bit tougher and come to work and do a little more, and get after it a little harder."
