Duke vs. North Carolina Post Game Quotes
March 1, 2009 ? Cameron Indoor Stadium ? Durham, N.C.Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallieOpening Statement
“Obviously, great basketball game, a game that we're really proud of our effort and how we played. We're really happy for our seniors in terms of their leadership and how it was provided and when it was provided. It was critical all the time. I think that was so important and for Jasmine (Thomas), you had a great look at her competitive spirit and her attacking mode at a critical time as well. Everyone did their part in this game, and I think our 32 offensive rebounds speaks to the hustle of the game and controlling the game as much as we could. Obviously, both teams played very, very hard. I loved the crowd, and it was obviously the best crowd of the year. That's the crowd we hope to attract to every game because, wow, it was a very vocal crowd and a great environment for women's basketball.”
On the defensive effort put up by the Blue Devils:
“Our team is a very multiple defensive team, so we have a lot of different defenses and we're very confident in playing them. Then we had foul trouble like crazy. No Chante (Black) in the game, losing that size and presence. I don't know how many minutes she was out, but she was out for a long time. We just tried to mix things up a little bit with matchups, and the team did a heck of a job with any adjustments we made. We did a lot of different things, but the bottom line was the players were just hustling and getting the boards. That was the critical thing ? we often made a first-shot miss, but we had to get the rebound and make sure we got the ball.”
On the mentality of the team during the comeback at the end of the first half:
“I think they just really wanted to snap back. We talked, of course, during timeouts about things, but I just attribute it to the leadership on the floor. The hustle plays that were being made were pretty incredible, and they were being made by a lot of different people. One thing I remember in particular was when things didn't look so good was Bridgette (Mitchell) on the bench, and she was really going crazy at her teammates. When I went to put her in, she was like “It's about time,” and she had a great attitude about it. There's something about Bridgette, and that energy is very contagious. I think the team as a whole picked it up, and various people tried to make a difference, and everybody did a little something to make it work.”
On the performance of the underclassmen and how they stepped up:
“I think just maturing and getting hungry ? you look at Bridgette's game, and she's been getting more confident and giving us more energy. Karima (Christmas) is just a competitor, and she just went out there and basically started hitting people, boarding and getting aggressive. And then Jasmine (Thomas), she's had many, many good games this year, and has been tough on herself for consistency. Everyone is competing hard, and when Chante (Black) was out there, she was competing hard. She had seven boards and four steals and was doing all sorts of good things. And I can't say enough about Karima ? she was everywhere; very focused and very loose at the same time. Very hard to keep up with.”
