SAN DIEGO, Calif. ? Former Duke pitcher Greg Burke made the jump to the big leagues last week when he was called up by the San Diego Padres to join the bullpen.
Burke made his major league debut on May 16 with a scoreless inning against the Cincinnati Reds. He has since gone on to log two more scoreless appearances, striking out three batters without giving up a walk during that span. He also has two holds and has helped protect one-run wins for San Diego in each of his three appearances.
A 2005 graduate of Duke, Burke was signed as a free agent by the Padres after his senior season at Duke. He was promoted to the AA San Antonio Missions in 2008 and put together a 2.24 ERA and 23 saves as the team's closer. At AAA Portland this year, Burke pitched in the same role and was 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA and seven saves as the Beavers' end-game reliever before joining the big league club.
Burke averaged 9.51 strikeouts per nine innings over the last two seasons compared to just 1.88 walks per nine. He had a 1.10 WHIP at AA in 2008 and a 0.75 mark in AAA this season.
Burke becomes the 39th Duke baseball player to reach the major leagues. He is one of three active Duke alumni who have appeared on a major league roster, joining Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Scott Schoeneweis and former Milwaukee Brewers starter Chris Capuano, who is currently pitching with the AAA Nashville Sounds.
