DURHAM, N.C. - The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame narrowed its candidates for the 2010 Bob Cousy Award from 73 players to 20 on Tuesday with Duke's senior guard Jon Scheyer making the list.
Scheyer is one of three ACC players among the final 20, joining Maryland's Greivis Vasquez and Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney. Scheyer currently leads the NCAA with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.88:1. While leading Duke to a 12-1 record and 1-0 start in ACC play, Scheyer has dished out 83 assists compared to just 17 turnovers. He ranks second in the ACC and tied for eighth nationally with 6.4 assists per game.
Not only has Scheyer helped out on a lot of baskets this season, he is also leading Duke in scoring (18.8 ppg.), three-point field goals (37), free throw percentage (.907) and steals (16). His 18.8 points per game ranks tied for 47th nationally and second in the ACC. He leads the ACC and ranks in the top 50 in both three-point field goals per game and free throw percentage while also ranking in the top 10 in the conference in three-point percentage.
Scheyer has guided a Duke offense that ranks sixth in the country with 85.9 points per game and has scored over 100 points four times. He leads a defense that is holding opponents to 59.5 points per game, good for 27th nationally. Scheyer has scored at least 20 points five times this season, including a career-high 36 points against Gardner-Webb. He has five or more assists in 11 of the 13 games wtih a career-best 11 against Pennsylvania.
The award given annually to the nation's top point guard is named for former Boston Celtic and Hall of Famer Bob Cousy. The original list of 73 nominations comprised student-athletes from Division I, II and III schools. The list of 20 will be narrowed to 10 by Feb. 1 and then to five by March 1. The recipient of the award will be announced at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on April 5 in Indianapolis as part of NCAA Final Four weekend.
