Blue Devil Golfers Start Strong at Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The third-ranked Duke women's golf team opened action on Friday at the 6,325-yard, par 72 Pete Dye Course at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C. The Landfall Tradition tournament will continue through Sunday, Oct. 24 with the Blue Devils being the defending champion in the event.
The Duke golfers finished tied for first on Friday along with Texas and are two strokes ahead of North Carolina. After day one's play, the team is currently at three-over-par, 291. Rounding out the top five teams were UCLA (294), South Carolina (299) and Notre Dame (299).
Leading the Blue Devils is senior Kim Donovan, who currently stands tied for first at two-under-par, 70, along with conference rival Caroline Ellington of N.C. State and Katherine Perry of North Carolina. Donovan, a product of Hopkinton, Mass., birdied three holes for the day and bogeyed two, while hitting 12 fairways, 12 greens and notching 28 putts.
Powering the Blue Devils to an early lead as well was freshman Alejandra Cangrejo, who finished with a one-under-par, 71, which is tied for fourth. Cangrejo had three birdies and three bogeys for the day.
Sophomores Lindy Duncan finished at two-over-par, with help from a late birdie on the 18th hole, while Stacey Kim finished four-over-par, closing out the day with a 76.
Courtney Ellenbogen, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Va., finished the day five-over par, with an early double bogey on the third and a late double-bogey on the 15th hole.
As a team, Duke notched 13 birdies on the challenging Landfall course. The Blue Devils will tee off on Saturday beginning at 10:10 a.m., along with Texas and North Carolina on hole No. 1.
