Jay Hollingsworth had a six-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for his second rushing touchdown of the season and third of his career. He now has five career touchdowns with three rushing and two receiving.
Duke Continues Red Zone SuccessThe Blue Devils were 1-for-1 in the red zone, scoring on Hollingsworth's touchdown run. For the season Duke is now 21-of-23 (.913) when moving the ball inside the 20-yard line. The Blue Devils have tallied 12 touchdowns and nine field goals for their 21 conversions.
Varner Enters Top 10Junior wide receiver
Donovan Varner climbed into the top 10 in Duke history for career receptions with his two grabs against Virginia Tech. He moved past Mark Militello and
Jomar Wright into 10th on the school's career list with 123 receptions.
Vernon Accomplishes First at DukeSophomore wide receiver
Conner Vernon became the first player in school history to catch 40 or more passes in his freshman and sophomore seasons. He had 55 catches last year and now has 43 through seven games this season.
Vernon Catches Six PassesThe six catches for Vernon gives him five games this season with five or more receptions and 10 career games. He has led the team in receiving in three games this season
Connette on the GroundTrue freshman quarterback
Brandon Connette was Duke's leading rusher on the day with 43 yards on eight attempts. It is his second highest rushing total of the season behind his 48 yards on one carry against Elon. He has now rushed for 170 yards on 40 attempts this season.
Double Digit Tackles For KromahRedshirt senior linebacker
Abraham Kromah recorded 10 tackles in the first half alone and finished the contest with 12 total stops. It is the fourth straight game Kromah has topped the double digit mark for tackles. He is averaging 13 tackles per game over the last four outings.
Kromah Records Second Career SackKromah tallied his second career sack in the first half. His first sack came against Clemson in 2008. The sack by Kromah broke a three-game streak without a sack for the Blue Devils' defense as the last sack came by
Kelby Brown against Alabama.
Defense Causes FumblesRedshirt sophomore safety
Jordon Byas posted his first career caused fumble in the second half. The fumble was recovered by junior
Matt Daniels, who now has two career fumble recoveries. Redshirt freshman defensive tackle
Sydney Sarmiento stripped a ball carrier inside the Virginia Tech five-yard line for his first career caused fumble.
Onside Kick SuccessFor the second straight week, Duke's
Will Snyderwine successfully converted an onside kick. To open the second half, Snyderwine sent the kick 11 yards up the middle of the field and fell on it himself. Against Miami Snyderwine lobbed a kick on the sideline that was caught by
Conner Vernon.
King Boots Second 60-Yard PuntJunior walk-on punter
Alex King kicked a 62-yard punt for his second attempt of 60 or more yards this season. He had a 64-yard kick against Alabama. In the Virginia Tech game, he tallied nine punts for 396 yards, an average of 44.0 yards per attempt. He had three kicks of 50 or more yards and five downed inside the 20-yard line.
