CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the second straight day, two freshmen led the Duke women's golf team at the Tar Heel Invitational as Laetitia Beck and Alejandra Cangrejo combined to shoot eight-under-par to move the Blue Devils into second place with 18 holes remaining at the 6,285-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
As a team, Duke shot a 10-under-par, 278, to move into second place with a total of 566, which is a season-best through three tournaments. The Blue Devils shot even par, 288, on day one. Alabama continues to hold a commanding lead with a 551 after 36 holes. Rounding out the top 10 were LSU (570), North Carolina (578), Virginia (579), Wake Forest (579), Auburn (581), Michigan State (581), Georgia (583) and Texas A&M (583).
"I saw a real mix today because I saw some bogeys to," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks. "I think when we look at the scores for this tournament; we are going to see lots of bogeys. For instance, Alejandra was three-under-par, went to even and then back to three-under-par. We did see a lot of birdies and matched those with a few rough holes. In the end, we came up 10 under so that is pretty good."
Beck opened her day as hot as can be with five birdies over her first nine holes and went on to shoot five-under-par, 67, on the day. A product of Caesarea, Israel, Beck registered birdies on No. 1, No. 3, No. No. 6, No. 7 and No. 9 on the front nine. For the day, she hit a team-best 17 greens with the only one missed being No. 8 and she was able to get up and down for par. Beck hit 10 fairways and had 30 putts on the day. She tallied seven pars, one three-putt bogey and one birdie on the nine to close out her day. Beck enters the final day fourth overall and four shots out of the lead with a 138.
"So my front nine was really good," said Beck. "I shot five-under on my front nine. On the back nine, I had one birdie and one bogey. I think I hit 17 greens [in the round]. I like this course. I have already shot seven-under here so I am pretty confident here."
A round that could have been even better than it turned out, Cangrejo finished with a three-under-par, 69. Cangrejo, who is from Bogota, Columbia, was three-under-par through seven holes and made the turn with a three-under-par, 33. She opened the back nine with three consecutive bogeys to move back to even par, but regrouped to close the final six holes at three-under-par. Cangrejo notched birdies on No. 13, No. 16 and No. 18. On the 18th, she hit her approach shot from the middle of the fairway to within less than two feet for birdie.
Cangrejo enters the final round tied for ninth with a 140. Her back-to-back rounds of under par is a first in her short career. She turned in a team-best 28 putts on the day to go along with 13 greens and 10 fairways.
"I am really happy," commented Brooks on the freshmen. "We are relying on them a little bit more than I would like to be right now. The freshmen -- we are so excited about them but we need a little bit more help from the upperclassmen. Everyone is swinging pretty well and I think we haven't seen our best day out here."
Both sophomore Lindy Duncan and sophomore Courtney Ellenbogen turned in rounds of one-under-par, 71, on Saturday. Duncan, a product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was even par on the front nine and moved to two-under-par after she sank her first eagle of the season and third of her career on 481-yard, par five 13th. She hit her 60-degree wedge from 50 yards away to 10 yards past the flag, but spun the ball back 10 feet and into the cup for eagle. Duncan suffered a bogey on the 16th hole before closing with back-to-back pars. She hit 14 greens, 11 fairways and had 31 putts on the day, while entering the final round tied for 22nd with a 144.
Carding her second under-par round of the season, Ellenbogen hit a season-best 16 greens in regulation on Saturday. After making the turn at one-over-par, 37, Ellenbogen kicked off the back nine with two consecutive birdies to move to one-under par. She closed with seven straight pars to finish with a 71. She rolled the ball close to the cup all day and finished with 33 putts and hit 12 greens. Ellenbogen is also tied for 22nd with a 36-hole 144.
Senior Kim Donovan turned in a four-over-par, 76, on day two and is tied for 42nd with a 150. Donovan, who is from Hopkinton, Mass., carded two birdies on the day but had six bogeys. For the day, she hit 11 fairways, 10 greens and had 32 putts.
A day after totaling 13 birdies, the Blue Devils had 19 birdies on Saturday.
"We are not going to change anything," said Brooks on going into the final round. "We have to keep the same, patient attitude. Just let the numbers fall. That is all you can do. You cannot press in this game. All we can do is bring the tools, do our job and hope the putts fall."
The Blue Devils will tee off on Sunday beginning at 9:15 a.m., along with LSU and Alabama in a shotgun start.
