DURHAM, N.C. - Duke senior Kyle Singler was named the Sporting News College Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
As a junior this past spring, Singler helped lead the men's basketball team to its fourth national championship while claiming NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors. He also was selected the MVP of the ACC Tournament as Duke won its second straight title and ninth in the past 12 seasons.
Now in his senior season, the Medford, Ore. native has helped the Blue Devils jump out to a 10-0 start with two wins over top 10 teams in No. 3 Kansas State and No. 6 Michigan State. Singler is averaging 16.3 point and 5.4 rebounds per game and leads the squad with 15 steals.
Sporting News selected Roy Halladay as its professional athlete of the year and Mike Bellamy as its high school athlete of the year.
Next up for Duke is Elon at 7 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday, Dec. 20.
