Noting Duke...
Duke has notched a 132-10 record at Cameron the last 10 years ... during the first 11 games of 2009, Duke only took five charges, but over the last 16 contests the players have taken 21 (Shay Selby - 6, Allison Vernerey - 5, Karima Christmas - 5) ... the Blue Devils are the only team in the ACC to have beaten a ranked non-conference opponent this season (No. 3 OSU and No. 25 JMU) ... the Blue Devils hold a 964-488 points in the paint advantage on the year ... Duke has been listed in the top 25 of the AP poll for 202 straight weeks, which is the longest current streak in the ACC and third nationally.
A Look At Virginia...
Virginia enters the contest on Friday with a 20-7 overall and 8-4 league mark under the direction of Head Coach Debbie Ryan. Senior Monica Wright is the lone double-figure scorer for the Cavaliers as she is averaging 22.7 points. Chelsea Shine (8.2 points), Ariana Moore (7.3 points), Whitny Edwards (7.1 points), China Crosby (5.9 points), Paulisha Kellum (5.7 points) and Lexie Gerson (5.0 points) are all averaging 5.0 points or more.
The Series With Virginia...
Virginia leads the overall series with Duke, 32-28, but the Blue Devils have won the past 16 in a row against the Cavaliers. The last Virginia victory came on Jan. 30, 2000 with a 61-49 win in Charlottesville, Va. In the last 27 games of the Duke/Virginia series, the Blue Devils own a 23-4 record dating back to March 4, 1995.
In games played in Durham, N.C., Duke owns a 14-14 overall record against the Cavaliers, but have won nine games in a row.
Blue Devil Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie will face Virginia for the fourth time in her 18-year coaching career. Coach P has notched a 3-0 record against the Cavaliers since taking over the Blue Devil post.
Storylines/Other Blue Devil Notes...
What Happened Last Time We Met...
Abby Waner scored 16 points to help Duke beat No. 24 Virginia 76-53 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament on March 6, 2009.
Joy Cheek added 10 of her 12 points after halftime for the third-seeded Blue Devils (25-4), who won their tournament opener for the 15th straight year. The Blue Devils certainly had little to complain about in this one, building a 25-point first-half lead and cruising the rest of the way for their 16th straight win against the Cavaliers (23-9). Duke shot 56 percent, including 8-for-13 from 3-point range, and scored 26 points off turnovers.
The Blue Devils had no such troubles. Aside from Waner's big game, Chante Black scored 12 points inside while Cheek came through with a flurry that turned away the Cavaliers' best rally of the night.
It's hard to imagine Duke could have played much better than it did in the first 17 minutes. The lead steadily grew during that dominating stretch, from 17-2 to 27-6 and finally 40-15 when Waner drained a three from several feet behind the arc with 2:43 left in the half.
Duke Players Vs. Virginia...
In three games against the Cavaliers, Jasmine Thomas has averaged 12.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 2.0 steals. She had 22 points last year at Virginia to go along with four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Thomas had only three points in 22 minutes as Duke cruised past Virginia in the ACC Tournament first round last year, 76-53.
Senior Joy Cheek has registered double-figure scoring on two occasions against Virginia -- 12 points, four rebounds in the ACC Tournament as year and 10 points and six rebounds in the ACC Tournament as a freshman.
Karima Christmas netted 18 points at Virginia last year as she hit 5-of-8 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws.
Blue Devils Need Win Friday to Clinch ACC Crown...
With a victory on Friday against Virginia, the Blue Devils will claim their ninth ACC Regular Season title in school history and the first under the direction of Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie.
Duke has registered ACC Regular Season titles in 2006-07, 2004-05, 2003-04, 2002-03, 2001-02, 2000-01, 1998-99 and 1997-98.
Coach P had collected six conference regular season titles over her career -- 5 at Maine (1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1998-99) and one at Michigan State (2004-05).
Senior Night on Friday...
Three Duke seniors -- Joy Cheek, Keturah Jackson and Bridgette Mitchell -- will play their final regular season contest in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Friday. The Blue Devils will be honored with 10 minutes left on the clock prior to the game.
Over the last four years, the trio has led Duke to a 107-22 overall record, 46-8 ACC mark and a 51-4 record in Cameron Indoor Stadium. They have advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, made two consecutive ACC Championship game appearances and scored a combined 2,121 points.
This will not be the final home contest though for the three seniors as Duke is hosting the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds on March 20 and 22.
At Home in Cameron Indoor Stadium...
Duke had its 24-game winning streak in Cameron Indoor Stadium come to an end on Monday, Jan. 18 against No. 1 Connecticut. During that streak, the Blue Devils knocked off six ranked opponents -- #3/3 Ohio State, #3/4 Stanford, #9/10 North Carolina, #12/15 Maryland, #14/15 Oklahoma State and #24/25 James Madison.
The undefeated season in 2008-09 at home marked only the second unblemished Cameron Indoor Stadium record in school history (2006-07). In three years at Duke, Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie has notched a 36-4 record in Cameron.
In Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke has won 37 out of the last 41 contests, 51 out of the last 55 and 132 out of the last 142 games since 2000-01.
