PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Duke women's golf team started its spring 2010 slate behind freshman Lindy Duncan, who is tied for first place after posting a team-best four-under-par, 67, to lead the Blue Devils on day one of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The tournament is being played at the 5,912-yard, Par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club in Palos Verdes, Calif.
Duncan shares the lead with Jennifer Song of Southern California after shooting a 32 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine during the first day of play. Taylore Kare of Pepperdine and Laura Kueny of Michigan State are tied for third after both registered a 69.
A product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan notched four straight birdies from holes No. 4-7 on the back nine after Duke started on hole No. 10. Her 18-hole total of 67 was a career best.
In the team standings, Southern California opened with a first-round even score, 284, to lead all 15 squads. Duke currently holds second place after shooting eight-over-par, 292, on the day. UCLA (295), Pepperdine (295), Denver (296), Wake Forest (298), Arizona State (300), Ohio State (300), Michigan State (300) and Florida (304) round out the top ten.
Senior Alison Whitaker ended the first day of play at one-over-par, 72, to share a five-way tie for seventh. Freshman Courtney Ellenbogen is tied for 21st after shooting a 74, while junior Kim Donovan is tied for 55th with a 79 and freshman Stacey Kim is tied for 60th with an 80.
As a team, Duke registered 14 total birdies, while Duncan paced the Blue Devils with six.
Play continues Tuesday, with Duke scheduled to tee off at 8:30 a.m.
