OCTOBER
Game 5: Duke at Maryland, October 2Series: Maryland leads, 30-18
Maryland in 2009: 2-10 overall record … finished sixth in the ACC Atlantic Division with a 1-7 league record … lost to Duke, 17-13, on October 24.
Duke-Maryland Last Year: Duke forced two turnovers in the final five minutes to seal a 17-13 win over the Terps … Duke quarterback
Thaddeus Lewis threw for 371 yards and two TDs while the Blue Devil defense held Maryland to just 67 rushing yards on the afternoon … Safety
Matt Daniels and linebacker
Vincent Rey paced Duke with nine and eight tackles, respectfully.
Noteworthy: Duke will make its first trip to College Park since a 33-20 loss in 2003 … Duke won 11 of the first 12 meetings between the two schools … Maryland won 15 straight over Duke between 1973-88 … In Maryland's 55-21 win over Duke in 2004, the Blue Devils scored via offense (
Ben Patrick six-yard pass from
Mike Schneider), defense (85-yard interception return by John Tally) and special teams (94-yard kickoff return by
Chris Davis).
Significant historical Duke win: In the 1994 season-opener, the Blue Devils received a school single-game record 238 rushing yards and four touchdowns from Robert Baldwin as Duke set the table for seven straight victories to begin the year … Baldwin, who had 100 yards on the ground in the opening quarter alone, carried the football 33 times on the day while quarterback Spence Fischer completed 15-of-24 throws for 197 yards and two scores … Duke outgained the Terrapins by a 531-278 count.
Significant historical Maryland win: In a matchup of two of the nation's top quarterbacks in Duke's Ben Bennett and Maryland's Boomer Esiason, the Terrapins jumped out to a 29-0 first quarter lead and cruised to a 49-22 win on October 23, 1982 … Maryland defensive back Lendell Jones set a league single-game record with four interceptions while Esiason threw for 253 yards and three TDs … Under the direction of ACC Coach of the Year pick Bobby Ross, the Terps would finish the year 8-4 overall with a 5-1 record in conference play and ranked 20th in the final AP national poll … The 1982 season would provide momentum for Maryland to win three consecutive ACC crowns in 1983, 1984 and 1985.

Game 6: Miami at Duke, October 16
Series: Miami leads, 6-1
Miami in 2009: 9-4 overall record … finished third in the ACC Coastal Division with a 5-3 league record … defeated Duke, 34-16, on November 21 … lost to Wisconsin, 20-14, in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Duke-Miami Last Year: The Hurricanes scored the final 24 points of the game en route to a 34-16 triumph … Duke led, 16-10, when
Will Snyderwine booted a 26-yard field goal early in the third period, but Miami countered with a field goal from Matt Bosher and then outscored the Blue Devils by a 21-0 count in the final quarter … Wide receiver
Donovan Varner led Duke with eight receptions for 165 yards and one TD.
Noteworthy: Two of Duke's standout wide receivers –
Donovan Varner and
Conner Vernon – are natives of Miami … Last year, Varner was a first team All-ACC pick after catching 65 passes for 1,047 yards and eight TDs while Vernon was a first team Freshman All-America choice after hauling in 55 passes for 746 yards and three TDs.
Significant historical Duke win: On October 9, 1976, Blue Devil running backs Tony Benjamin and Art Gore scored rushing touchdowns while kicker Vince Fusco booted two field goals in a 20-7 win over Miami … The Hurricanes amassed 352 yards of total offense but were hurt by 12 penalties and two turnovers.
Significant historical Miami win: On the game's final snap from scrimmage, Miami linebacker Willie Cooper intercepted a
Thaddeus Lewis pass in the end zone to preserve a 20-15 win for the Hurricanes on October 21, 2006 in Durham … Duke trailed 20-2 heading into the final period, and pulled within 20-15 with touchdowns by
Raphael Chestnut and
Re'quan Boyette … Behind the play of the Miami-area native Lewis, the Blue Devils drove 83 yards to the six yard line but Cooper spoiled the opportunity … Miami was led by quarterback Kyle Wright, who threw for 299 yards and two touchdowns.

Game 7: Duke at Virginia Tech, October 23
Series: Virginia Tech leads, 10-7
Virginia Tech in 2009: 10-3 overall record … finished second in the ACC Coastal Division with a 6-2 league record … defeated Duke, 34-26, on October 3 … defeated Tennessee, 37-14, in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Duke-Virginia Tech Last Year: Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor threw for 327 yards and two TDs and the Hokies held off Duke for a 34-26 win … Trailing 34-19 late in the fourth period, the Blue Devils pulled within eight points with 25 seconds left when
Thaddeus Lewis tossed a four-yard touchdown pass to
Austin Kelly, but Duke's on-side kick attempt was unsuccessful … Duke kicker
Will Snyderwine booted four field goals on the day covering 25, 29, 43 and 47 yards.
Noteworthy: The Duke-Virginia Tech series has been a tale of two runs … The Blue Devils won the first six affairs by outscoring the Hokies, 207-19, with three shutouts between 1937-51 … After the two squads split games in 1969 (VT win, 48-12) and 1981 (Duke win, 14-7), Virginia Tech has won the past nine tilts by a combined score of 289-95 with three shutouts since 1982.
Significant historical Duke win: Duke cornerback Dennis Tabron intercepted a Hokie pass and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown with just 56 seconds left in the game to propel the Blue Devils to a 14-7 win over Virginia Tech on October 10, 1981 … Duke's Mike Grayson (26 attempts for 104 yards) and Virginia Tech's Cyrus Lawrence (31 attempts for 179 yards) highlighted the day with their respective rushing performances.
Significant historical Virginia Tech win: Virginia Tech earned its first football victory as a member of the ACC with a 41-17 triumph over Duke on September 18, 2004 … Tech quarterback Bryan Randall threw for 138 yards and one TD while rushing for 93 yards and another score … After Duke claimed a 7-0 lead on
Deon Adams' 28-yard touchdown run, the Hokies scored 34 unanswered points en route to the victory.

Game 8: Duke at Navy, October 30Series: Navy leads, 21-12-5
Navy in 2009: 10-4 overall record … defeated Missouri, 35-13, in the Texas Bowl.
Duke-Navy Last Year: N/A
Noteworthy: The Midshipmen have won eight or more games in seven consecutive seasons and have finished among the top five teams nationally in rushing offense in each of the past eight years.
Significant historical Duke win: On November 5, 1960, Navy travelled to Durham boasting a perfect 8-0 record, No. 4 national ranking and Joe Bellino … The 13th-ranked Blue Devils would hold Bellino – the eventual 1960 Heisman Trophy recipient – in check, limiting the standout back to 62 rushing yards on 20 attempts while handing the Midshipmen their first loss of the year, 19-10.
Significant historical Navy win: On November 16, 1963, Navy quarterback Roger Staubach helped the second-ranked Mids to a 38-25 triumph in front of 41,000 fans at Wallace Wade Stadium by completing seven-of-14 passes for 122 yards and rushing 12 times for an additional 72 yards … Staubach would capture the Heisman Trophy after leading Navy to a 9-2 overall record including a loss to eventual national champion Texas in the Cotton Bowl.
