Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski
Opening Statement
"Well, we're really pleased with the win. I thought we beat a really good Virginia team - a team that had come off of a win, ball control. Their two big guys are very good. We knew we had to defend the three, and we knew it would be a low-scoring game. I thought our defense was very good throughout. And in the second half, we had a much better flow offensively. We executed really well a couple times to give us a three and four possession lead ... I don't think it was the best game we ever played, but I think Virginia had a lot to do with that and how they handled the ball and how they controlled tempo."
On playing Virginia's style
"We tried to force tempo today with pressing but we didn't score. If we had gotten a few more buckets, it would have added a little more energy. When we weren't scoring and we were defending that way, we thought we were going to wear our team out so then we went back to playing defense the way we normally were going to play it."
On winning the ACC title
"Winning the ACC is big, obviously. We have won it eight of the last 11 years. Still, you are looking ahead to next week (the NCAAs). You are wondering what is going to happen and how you have to create a sense of urgency for this moment and I thought our team was able to do that by the second half."
On consistency of his team
"My team has been consistent since 1995. We are the winningest program in the last decade. Pretty consistent. We have been pretty good every year and we are going to compete throughout the whole year."
Junior Guard Kyle Singler
On his second-half shooting performance
"I just got the ball in some good spots on the floor, and I was able to just put the ball in the hole. It's kind of simple like that, I guess."
On getting into foul trouble
"I want to play as much as I can. And that's not to take anything away from Coach [Krzyzewski]. But I might have been fresher coming out in the second half, but I was in foul trouble, and it was actually good to get some other guys in there to get a lift from them."
Junior Guard Kyle Singler (continued)
On the team's shooting struggles early
"I don't think we just came out with the sense of urgency that we needed to. We were sluggish. Virginia was playing well, but I think, pretty much for the full game, our defense was there. And I think that's what kept us in it."
On using his size advantage down low
"I knew I was matched up against someone that I was taller than and I wanted to catch the ball in the post or get to the free throw line so that was kind of my mindset going into the game."
Junior Guard Nolan Smith
On the team's defensive effort despite shooting problems
"First of all, when we haven't shot the ball well, it's been our defense that has kept us above water. If we're not shooting the ball well, if we continue to do that, we're going to win games like this."
Junior Guard Nolan Smith
Anything different down the stretch defensively?
"We didn't do anything differently down the stretch, we just wanted to keep them from getting threes. They have great shooters on the perimeter. (Brian) Zoubek and Lance (Thomas) did a great job inside. (Jerome) Meyinsse is a great player and we just got stops.
