PHILADELPHIA - The Duke University track and field concluded day two at the 116th annual Penn Relays, competing in five events in total. Freshman Austin Gamble led the way with a first-place effort in the men's college discus, recording a throw of 175-8.
In the men's college pole vault, Tony Shirk tied for seventh, clearing 15-9, while Michael Barbas took sixth place in the men's college shot put. Barbas registered a throw of 53-1.75 to finish in the top ten for the sixth time this season.
A day after the women's distance medley relay record the No. 3 all-time performance in school history, the women's 4x1,500m clocked the No. 4 all-time performance in that event. The team finished sixth with a 18:03.65 total time. Emily Sherrard led off the race with a 4:30.1 performance, followed by Kate Van Buskirk and Suejin Ahn in 4:20.4 and 4:31.1, respectively. Anna Farias-Eisner ended the race with a 4:42.1 showing.
The third and final day of the 2010 Penn Relays will begin tomorrow morning. John Austin leads off the day for Duke at 11 a.m., competing in the men's championship javelin. Duke will take part in the men's 4xmile relay, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. and closes out the weekend with both the men's and women's 4x800m relays.
