DURHAM, N.C. - The seventh-seeded Duke women's lacrosse team is set to host Vanderbilt at Koskinen Stadium in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Championships this Sunday, May 16 at 2 p.m. The Blue Devils, who are making their 13th-consecutive appearance in the tournament, earned an at-large bid to the 16-team field as announced by the selection committee Sunday, May 9.
First round tickets run $7 for adults and $5 for students/seniors and are available online via GoDuke.com or by calling the Duke Athletic Ticket Office at 1-877-375-3853). Gates open 60 minutes prior to the start of the match. Gametracker coverage will also be available through GoDuke.com.
Duke holds a 13-12 record in NCAA Tournament action and has advanced past the first round in each of the past five seasons, including four straight semifinal appearances from 2005-2008. A year ago, the Blue Devils defeated Virginia in the opening round, 15-13, before falling to No. 4 seed Pennsylvania, 10-9, in overtime.
Overall, Duke is 13-3 against Vanderbilt, including a 19-10 win over the Commodores in Nashville on Feb. 14 of this season. Vanderbilt's last win over Duke came on April 20, 2008 as the Commodores bested the Blue Devils 11-10. The Blue Devils are 1-0 when facing Vanderbilt in the NCAA Tournament, taking a 10-5 decision from the Commodores on May 9, 2002.
Duke, ranked fifth in the latest IWLCA poll and sixth by Inside Lacrosse, is now 13-5 on the year after topping Brown, 23-9, on Sunday, May 9 to close out the regular season. All-ACC honoree and Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Sarah Bullard leads the Devils with a career-best 45 goals this season, followed closely by Lindsay Gilbride, also an All-ACC and Tewaaraton selection, with 40 scores. Christie Kaestner is tops on the team with 67 points and 36 assists, both career highs, and Kat Thomas, who leads the team with 60 draws, rounds out Duke's top scorers with 37 goals on the year.
In net, Kaitlin Gaiss has taken over the starting role, posting a 7-4 record and 56 saves in 11 starts.
The winner of Sunday's game will advance to face the winner of Notre Dame-Northwestern in the NCAA Championships second round.
