Upcoming Event: Women's Golf versus Sea Best Intercollegiate on January 26, 2026

5/19/2010 8:00:00 PM | Women's Golf
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Coming off a solid even par round on Tuesday to open the 2010 NCAA Championship, the fifth-ranked and third-seeded Duke women's golf team struggled on Wednesday and finds themselves in 12th place as the second round play was halted due to inclement weather at the 6,368-yard, Par 72 Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
Duke was one of 18 teams who completed its second round with six squads still yet to finish action. The second round will resume at 7:30 a.m., on Thursday morning followed by the third round starting one hour after the second round is completed. Play was stopped on three different occasions on Wednesday afternoon due to inclement weather.
The Blue Devils own a two-day total of 591 and is 21 shots off leader Southern California (570). Duke has made impressive comebacks already this season and will need yet another to make a run at its sixth NCAA title. In the fall, the Blue Devils were down 10 strokes heading into the final day of the NCAA Fall Preview at Landfall and fired a final round 288 to win by one stroke over then No. 1 ranked UCLA and Auburn.
"It wasn't what we had in mind," said Duke Head Coach Dan Brooks on Wednesday's round. "There are two days left and we have players who have all shot under par golf this year. We came back from 15 shots in nine holes at the ACC [Championship] and then let it slip away at the end. We actually made that kind of run so we have possibilities. It is a little bit tougher to do here. I believe everyone is on board to keep fighting, play two more days and you never know. We came back here as a matter of fact and won in the fall."
At the ACC Championship in April, the Blue Devils were down 15 strokes on the final day to Wake Forest and came back to take the lead after nine holes before falling back to third to close out the day.
Rounding out the top 15 squads are Alabama (577), Purdue (578), UCLA (580), Arizona State (581), Arizona (582), Virginia (585), Florida State, Vanderbilt (588), Auburn (589), Oklahoma State (589), Duke (591), TCU, Texas A&M and Texas (595).
"We have to stay really patient and not try to do anything spectacular," said Brooks. "I think it is very important on a Pete Dye Golf Course to just keep playing solid golf -- hitting lots of greens. The putts are either going to fall or there not and that's the way you are going to go under. You are going to have it happen or not, but it is not going to be because you are making more aggressive choices -- that won't work."
Carding Duke's best round of the day was freshman Courtney Ellenbogen as she fired a one-over-par, 73. After totaling a bogey on the second hole, Ellenbogen responded with five pars before registering back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9. On the 168-yard, par three eighth hole, Ellenbogen rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt and then stuck her approach shot on the ninth to within six feet for another birdie. She closed the day with seven pars and bogeys on No. 13 and No. 14. A Blacksburg, Va., product, Ellenbogen had a team-best 29 putts to go along with 10 greens in regulation and hitting 11 fairways.
"I hit the ball very well," commented Ellenbogen. "I was hitting my drives right down the middle and hitting a lot of greens. A few putts could have fallen that I didn't make but the opportunity was out there to score. That is good as I can take that into tomorrow."
Ellenbogen enters the third round tied for 29th with a 147.
"I am real happy for Courtney," said Brooks. "She has been working hard on her swing. She came in a year ago with a hook that had pestered her for a year and a half before she came to Duke. She has got that worked out and is hitting a straight ball or a slight fade right now."
Senior Alison Whitaker turned in a 75 on Wednesday and owns a 36-hole total of 149, which is tied for 52nd. She turned in three birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey on the 387-yard, par four 11th hole. Whitaker, who is from Melbourne, Australia, was even par through 11 holes with birdies on the second and seventh holes. Her double on No. 11 along with bogeys to close out the round on No. 16 and No. 18 led to the three-over-par, 39, on the back. Whitaker drained her third birdie of the day on No. 14 as she holed an 10-foot putt.
For the round, Whitaker notched a team-high 35 putts, while hitting 14 greens and 10 fairways. She was 0-of-3 on up-and-downs.
Freshman Lindy Duncan carded a four-over-par, 76, on the second day, which was marred by two double-bogeys on the fifth and 15th holes. Duncan, the ACC Player and Rookie of the Year out of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., struggled with her putting and driving as she finished with 34 putts and seven fairways hit in round two. She opened her day with a three-over-par, 39, on the front nine without any birdies and then notched two birdies on the back nine on holes 12 and 16. If you take away the two doubles, she ranked second on the Blue Devil squad with 12 pars on Wednesday. Duncan enters the third round tied for 46th with a 148.
A product of Columbus, Ga., freshman Stacey Kim continued to struggle in her first appearance at the NCAA Championship as she turned in her second straight 79, but closed strong with back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. Kim turned in a wild first nine as she was six-over-par when she made the turn but was solid on the back with a one-over-par, 37. On the day, Kim totaled three birdies, which included No. 4 when she hit her 56-degree wedge to within two feet from 85 yards away.
After carding a four-under-par, 68, on day one, junior Kim Donovan got off to a rough start on Wednesday and never could quite get it going in the second round. One shot off the individual lead through 18 holes, Donovan suffered a quadruple-bogey on the second hole as she hit her tee shot into the sand trap on the 131-yard, par three island green. It took her three shots out of the sand and then she three-putted for a seven. Donovan made the turn at six-over-par, 42, and played better on the back with seven pars, one bogey and one double-bogey to finish with an 81. She enters the third round tied for 52nd with a 149.
Donovan, who is from Hopkinton, Mass., hit 10 greens on Wednesday after hitting all 18 the first day, while totaling 34 putts and hitting eight fairways.
"This tournament is a day longer than all the other ones so that is a lot of golf," said Ellenbogen. "We have seen what can happen with both our team and other teams. So we know the opportunities are out there to come back."
If Duke remains in 12th place through the second round, the Blue Devils will tee off in the afternoon on Thursday to kick off the third round. Tee times for the third round will be released in the morning following the completion of the second round.
"We have to be really positive -- insanely positive in fact," said Whitaker on the chances to come back the next two days. "I think that nationals is one of those weeks where it is such a long week that everyone is going to have a bad day. This is ours. Over the next two days, we will make up a little bit of ground. ACCs showed us -- the first nine holes of the last round we made up 15 shots on our opponents. I think that really showed us what we are capable of doing on the golf course. If we can keep that in mind hopefully tomorrow we can go out and shoot some low scores."
