DURHAM, N.C. - Duke-bound golfer Yarik Merkulov will represent the United States this week at the TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup 2010 in Toyota City, Japan. The U.S. will tee off with Denmark and Thailand on Tuesday morning at the 6,942-yard, par 71 Chukyo Golf Club's Ishino Course.
The TOYOTA Junior Golf World Cup is a four-day international tournament featuring 12 national teams that have won their respective regional qualifiers. There are four players on each team, with three of those scores counting per round.
Team USA has won the tournament five times since its establishment in 1992, with the last title coming in 2005. Merkulov is joined on the team by Oliver Schniederjans (Georgia Tech), Cameron Wilson (Stanford) and Bobby Wyatt (Alabama).
A native of Penfield, N.Y., Merkulov is listed at third in the Polo Golf rankings and sixth in the Golfweek/Sagarin Junior ratings. He was a 2009 Rolex Jr. first team All-America selection and the runner-up at the 2009 Junior PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Merkulov notched five top 20 finishes at AJGA events in 2009. He also won the 87th New York Amateur at the age of 17, tying for the youngest champion in tournament history.
Merkulov and fellow incoming freshman Austin Cody are expected to make an immediate impact when they join the Blue Devils this fall.
