DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's lacrosse team has garnered Merit Squad status from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as announced by the organization Friday, August 13. Duke is one of three schools to earn the honor, joining Hofstra University and Stanford University.
Institutions were named Merit Squads by virtue of having one of the top three team GPAs for the season. In addition, 48 others earned Academic Squad honors for the 2010 season after posting a team GPA of 3.0 or higher. Hofstra University topped all schools in Division I for the 2010 season with a 3.492 GPA, while Stanford University (3.477) narrowly edged the Blue Devils (3.471) for the second spot.
Of the 51 institutions honored by the IWLCA, ten participated in the 2010 NCAA Championships, including Duke, which made its 13th consecutive appearance in the tournament this past season.
