HARRISONBURG, Va. - Junior Tara Jennings broke a scoreless tie in the 84th minute of play as the No. 10 Duke field hockey team knocked off No. 12 James Madison in overtime, 1-0, Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Va.
"Obviously we're really thrilled to get out of here with a win," head coach Beth Bozman said. "We're still struggling to finish our shots. We dominate possession time and we really need to find a way to capitalize on our scoring opportunities. But the bottom line is, we scratched one out today and we're really happy with the end result."
With the clock winding down in the overtime period, Duke (3-1) received a corner opportunity after continuously pressuring the James Madison defense throughout the period. Freshman Paula Heimbach took the ball into Duke's attacking end and created the corner situation for the Blue Devils, which resulted in sophomore Mary Nielsen's shot just barely ricocheting off the crossbar. However, Duke earned another corner opportunity off the play and Jennings was able to put away the game for the Blue Devils with her first goal of the season, assisted by Chelsea Amsley and Stefanie Fee.
"Any overtime you want to maintain possession and keep it in your attacking end," Bozman added, "and I thought we did a really good job of that. Kudos to Paula Heimbach because she's the one that set up the opportunity for us to eventually win."
Duke led James Madison in both shots (14-10) and corners (8-3) for the game as the Blue Devils won their second straight contest and James Madison fell to 2-2 with the loss. Senior Samantha Nelson earned the win in goal as she made five saves to preserve Duke's second consecutive shutout.
"We really dominated the possession time," Bozman said. "We felt we should have put the game away in the first half. James Madison created some really dangerous scoring opportunities themselves and made us work hard and really earn this game."
Duke opens ACC play next Saturday, September 11 at Wake Forest in a 1 p.m. match-up before hosting Drexel in the Blue Devils' home opener Sunday, September 12 at 1 p.m.
