
Duke Wraps Up ITA All-American Pre-Qualifying

Hammond opened play Sunday with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (3) victory over David Cavalcanti of Wichita State. With the win, Hammond advanced to the final round of pre-qualifying play, where he faced Memphis' Johnny Grimal. Hammond took the first set of that match, but ultimately fell to Grimal by a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Following a victory in the second round on Saturday, Marchese grabbed a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 win over Filip Rams of Temple in Sunday's third round. The Summit, N.J., native then moved on to the final round, where he fell to Mississippi's Johan Backstrom, 6-4, 6-3.
Three other Blue Devils will see action in Tulsa on Monday in the qualifying rounds of the ITA All-American Championships. Freshman Jason Tahir will start first round singles action for Duke at 10:30 a.m. EST against Ricky Doverspike of Alabama. Sophomore Fred Saba - ranked No. 93 on the ITA's preseason list - is slated to take the court against Ohio State's Connor Smith at 12 p.m., while freshman Raphael Hemmeler will face San Diego's Patrick Pohlmann at 5:30 p.m.
Players must win three matches to qualify for the main draw of the tournament. Junior Henrique Cunha received an automatic bid to the main draw, which begins on Thursday, Oct. 6 in Tulsa.
