Cangrejo Has Solid Start to Open Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Duke sophomore Alejandra Cangrejo carded a three-over-par, 75, on Friday to open the Landfall Tradition and is tied for eighth overall with 36 holes remaining at the 6,208-yard, par 72 Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.

Cangrejo, who is out of Bogota, Colombia, started her round off very solid six pars and one birdie on the 407-yard, par four 13th to open at one-under-par. Starting on hole 17, she struggled with four bogeys over six holes to drop to two-over-par. Cangrejo notched a birdie on the fifth hole to get back to one-over-par, but closed with a double-bogey on No. 8 and a par on the ninth hole to finish with a 75.

Although Cangrejo only hit five greens after driving to 13 fairways, she was able to total 26 putts on the day.

Leading the individual action is Purdue's Paula Reto with a one-under-par, 71, while Auburn's Victoria Trapani is second at even-par, 72.

All teams had to deal with strong winds and inclement weather on Friday, which forced them to wear rain gear all day. As a team, Duke shot a 314 on day one, which is a season-high for the Blue Devils. Leading the action is Auburn with a 297, while Purdue (304), Notre Dame (306), North Carolina (306), South Carolina (307), Ohio State (308), Chattanooga (309), Wake Forest (311), N.C. State (311), Michigan State (312) and Duke (314) rounded out the top 11 squads.

The Blue Devils are playing this weekend without junior Lindy Duncan, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. A product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Duncan is recovering from a foot injury.

Fellow sophomore Laetitia Beck, who is from Caesarea, Israel, carded a first round 76 on Friday and is tied for 13th overall. She hit 12 greens and 12 fairways, while registering 33 putts. Beck totaled one birdie, on the 461-yard, par five seventh hole.

Closing out the Blue Devil golfers on Friday was Courtney Ellenbogen (80), Stacey Kim (83) and Irene Jung (92).

Duke will tee off on Saturday in the second round beginning at 10:10 a.m., along with Michigan State and Iowa State.
