Senior Torsten Wietoska earned the No. 1 seed in the singles tournament. He defeated East Carolina's John Schmitt in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to Saturday's second round of play, where he will face NC State's Julian Sullivan at 10 a.m. Wietoska is now 3-1 in fall singles action.
Fellow senior David Holland also won his first-round match in straight sets, posting a 6-4, 6-3 win over Radford's Igor Ogrizek. However, the Pennington, N.J., native will not compete in his second-round singles match.
Sophomore Cale Hammond battled to three sets against Old Dominion's Krzysztof Muzalewski in Friday's first round. Muzalewski took the first set, 7-5, while Hammond answered with a 6-2 win. However, the Muzalewski would advance on a 6-2 win in the third set. The loss sent Hammond to the tournament's backdraw, where he will face Yusuke Kusuda of Coastal Carolina Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
Holland and Hammond also took the court in doubles play, where they drew a first-round matchup against Fernando Guillen and David Clavera of Campbell. The match went into three tiebreakers, with Guillen and Clavera hanging on for a 9-8 (3) victory. The loss sends Holland and Hammond to the doubles backdraw, where they are slated to face Coastal Carolina's Matias Di Pasquale and Kusuda at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Duke's run at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., came to an end Friday afternoon, as the tandem of junior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Chris Mengel fell in the first round of doubles consolation.
Ranked 15th as a pair on the ITA's preseason list, Cunha and Mengel entered the first round of doubles consolation play following an 8-5 loss on Thursday to Andreas Mies and Alex Stamchev of Auburn in the doubles main draw.
The Blue Devil duo faced seventh-ranked Louis Cant and Malte Stropp of Mississippi State in Friday's match, suffering a tough 8-5 loss to end their run at the tournament. Cunha and Mengel are now 1-3 in doubles action this fall.
