CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by a four-under-par, 68, on Saturday by junior Lindy Duncan, the 11th-ranked Duke women's golf team surged into 10th place overall at the 2011 Tar Heel Invitational, which is being played at the 6,285-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
After turning in a 74 in round one, Duncan carded five birdies and one bogey on the day. Duncan, a product of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., jumped to tied for 11th overall and is seven shots off individual leader Hannah Collier of Alabama (135). Through two days, Duncan owns a 36-hole total of 142, which is two-under par. She hit 17 of 18 greens, 12 fairways and had 32 putts on the day.
Duncan has been stellar in the second rounds of all three tournaments this season as she has notched two 69s and one 68.
As a team, Duke posted a one-under-par, 287, and now owns a 36-hole total of 585. The Blue Devils are in 10th overall with Alabama continuing to maintain the lead with a seven-under-par, 569. LSU (569), North Carolina (576), Auburn (577), N.C. State (580), Georgia (581), Wake Forest (581), Michigan State (582), Tennessee (583), Duke (585), South Carolina (588), Virginia (589), Louisville (592), Tulane (595) and Coastal Carolina (600) rounding out the top 15 teams.
Junior Stacey Kim had her first round of even or under par of the season on Saturday with an even-par 72. Kim, who is from Columbus, Ga., hit 12 greens, 10 fairways and had 30 putts on the day. She opened with six straight pars before suffering back-to-back bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes. Kim responded to register a birdie on the 18th and was one-under-par on the final nine with a birdie on the 17th. Over the last 10 holes, Kim was two-under-par. She is tied for 35th overall with one day remaining.
A day after struggling with an 82 in round one, Irene Jung came back strong on Saturday to collect a one-over-par, 73. She is now tied for 82nd with a 155. Jung, who is from Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada, was one-over-par on her opening nine holes as she notched eight pars and one bogey on No. 13. The freshman closed with an even par final nine as she notched birdies on No. 1, No. 3 and No. 7 to go along with three bogeys and three pars. Jung hit 12 fairways, 12 greens and had 29 putts on the day. On all three of her birdies, Jung hit it inside 10 feet and drained the putts.
Alejandra Cangrejo, who is a native of Bogota, Colombia, had a 74 on day two to move up to 54th overall with a 147. She was even par on the front nine as she notched birdies on the 13th and 18th holes. Cangrejo had a solid final nine with seven pars, but had a double-bogey on the seventh two finish two-over-par. She rolled in 31 putts, hit 12 greens and hit nine fairways on Saturday.
Duke was without the services of sophomore Laetitia Beck, who was observing the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. She had shot an even-par, 72, on day one and was tied for 16th overall after day one. Beck will be back on Sunday for round three.
As a team, the Blue Devils carded 12 birdies on the day.
Duke will tee off on Sunday in the final round beginning at 9:15 a.m., with a shotgun start. The Blue Devils will open on holes No. 10 and No. 11 along with Virginia and South Carolina. The Gamecocks are coached by Duke alum Kalen Anderson.
