Mengel started off the day with a consolation quarterfinal match against No. 6 Will Spencer of Georgia. Ranked 49th on the ITA's preseason list, Mengel fought hard against the top seed in the consolation bracket, but it was Spencer who would move on with a 6-2, 6-4 win. The loss moves Mengel to 12-3 overall in fall singles action.
Meanwhile, fourth-ranked and fifth-seeded Cunha returned to the court Saturday afternoon in the semifinal round of the singles main draw, where he faced top-seeded Mitchell Frank of Virginia. Frank took the first set, 6-2, and took a 2-1 lead in the second frame. Cunha earned a key break to make it 5-3 later in the set, but Frank held on for a 6-3 victory to advance to the tournament finals. Cunha now owns a ledger of 12-4 in fall singles play.
"It was a great tournament for both guys," said assistant coach Jonathan Stokke. "Cunha showed everyone that he is one of the best players in the country with a great run to the semifinals. I was also excited with our doubles play. Chris has been working really hard on doubles lately, and he and Cunha showed a ton of improvement by getting a top-10 win together."
Duke returns to action next weekend at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club Nov. 11-13 in Bradenton, Fla.
