1. Mike Krzyzewski
Now in his 32nd season at the helm of Duke's storied basketball program, Mike Krzyzewski reached a new milestone in the coaching ranks on November 15 as his 903rd career victory – a 74-69 win over Michigan State at Madison Square Garden – pushed him past Bob Knight into first place on the NCAA's all-time victory chart for Division I men's college basketball.
Knight, who coached Krzyzewski at Army, was on hand for the record-breaking triumph as a member of ESPN's broadcast crew. The two exchanged a special moment courtside immediately following the game.
"I just told Coach I love him," Krzyzewski said. "I wouldn't be in this position without him. It's a moment shared. I know he's very proud, and I'm very proud to have been somebody who's worked under him and studied him and tried to be like him.
"I'm not sure how many people tell him they love him but I love him for what he's done for me and I thanked him. He said 'Boy, you've done pretty good for a kid who couldn't shoot.' I think that means he loves me too. At least that's how I'm taking that."
Sports Illustrated, in turn, crowned Krzyzewski with the publication's highest honor – Sportsman of the Year – in December. Krzyzewski shared the stage alongside Tennessee coaching legend Pat Summit, who was named the Sportswoman of the Year. The two were honored in New York City on December 6.
