DURHAM, N.C. - The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) released the 2011 All-ACC women's basketball team on Tuesday morning with Duke seniors Jasmine Thomas and Krystal Thomas along with freshman Chelsea Gray earning honors. The accolades are voted on by the league's "Blue Ribbon Panel," which consists of national and local media members, as well as school representatives.
Jasmine Thomas earned first team honors for the second straight year, while Krystal Thomas was named to the third team and Gray earned honorable mention accolades.
With Jasmine Thomas being named to the first team, Duke has now registered at least one member on the All-ACC first team in 12 out of the last 13 years. Other members of the first team include Carolyn Swords (Boston College), Shenise Johnson (Miami), Cierra Bravard (Florida State) and Riquna Williams (Miami).
Thomas, a native of Fairfax, Va., has averaged 14.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.5 steals on the season. She is a John R. Wooden, State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith candidate for National Player of the Year. The 5-9 guard has picked up her play against ranked opponents once again this season averaging 16.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.4 steals.
With her two first team selections, Thomas joins some elite company as only Alana Beard, Monique Currie, Georgia Schweitzer and Iciss Tillis were selected to the All-ACC first team on at least two occasions in Blue Devil history.
On the second team was Bonae Holston (N.C. State), Lynetta Kizer (Maryland), Italee Lucas (North Carolina, Alex Montgomery (Georgia Tech) and Alyssa Thomas (Maryland).
Along with Krystal Thomas on the third team was Tyaunna Marshall (Georgia Tech), Stefanie Murphy (Boston College), Morgan Stroman (Miami) and Courtney Ward (Florida State).
A product of Orlando, Fla., Thomas currently leads the ACC in rebounding with a 9.0 per game average to go along with averaging 8.3 points, 1.9 blocks, 1.3 steals and 1.0 assists. The 6-5 center played some of her best basketball against ACC opponents as she led the league with a 10.3 rebound average in 14 league contests. Thomas has a chance become the first Blue Devil to lead the ACC in rebounding since 1989 when Tracey Christopher pulled down a 9.6 per game average.
After coming in and making an immediate impact with the Blue Devils, Gray was one of five honorable mention selections, who received 15 or more votes -- Jessica Breland (North Carolina), Laura Broomfield (North Carolina), Cetera DeGraffenreid (North Carolina), Marissa Kastanek (N.C. State).
Gray, who is from Stockton, Calif., averaged 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.9 steals on the season, but has been sidelined as of late with a combination of the flu and an injured ankle. She has played only eight minutes over the last four games. The 5-11 point guard notched double-figure scoring against six ACC opponents, including a career-high 20 points at 13th-ranked North Carolina.
With a 66-58 victory over 13th-ranked North Carolina on Sunday, the ninth-ranked Duke women's basketball team clinched a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Regular Season Championship and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2011 ACC Championship.
The championship will begin on Thursday, March 3 at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C., with four first round games. Duke, who enters postseason action with a 26-3 overall and 12-2 league mark, will take on the winner of the No. 8 seed Virginia (16-14) versus No. 9 seed Wake Forest (14-16) on Friday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. The game on Friday will be aired live on RSN-TV -- Fox Sports Net South (FSNS), ComCast Sports Net (CSN), Fox Sports Net Florida (FSNFL), New England Sports Network (NESN).
