DURHAM, N.C. - Duke right-hander
Marcus Stroman preserved the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team's 4-3 comeback win over the Japan Collegiate All-Stars on Tuesday evening at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With a hitless ninth inning, Stroman has now converted all four save opportunities as the Team USA closer and has yet to allow a hit in his 6.2 innings. A rising junior for the Blue Devils, Stroman struck out two batters on Tuesday, giving him 16 strikeouts against the 22 batters he has faced.
Stroman was called on for the second time in three days after Team USA scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 4-3 lead. After making quick work of Japan cleanup hitter Hotaka Yamakawa and five-hitter Ryutaro Umeno, the 5-9, 185-pound right-hander issued his first walk of the summer to second baseman Ryosuke Obuta. Obuta would then steal second, but was left stranded there when Stroman struck out Hiroki Nakashima on four pitches to end the game.
With two wins on Tuesday, including an 8-2 win in the morning affair, Team USA has clinched the five-game series against Japan and leads the series 3-0. Game four of the series takes place at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium in Kannapolis, N.C., on Wednesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. The series finale will be played at the new TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb., on July 8.
