DURHAM, N.C. – In its first action against other competition, the Duke women's soccer team faced William & Mary on Saturday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in an exhibition match that concluded in a 2-2 draw. The contest featured three 30-minute periods followed by a 20-minute overtime period.
Duke came out and set the tone early with sophomore
Mollie Pathman and sophomore
Laura Weinberg attempting the first shots of the match. Pathman, who is a native of Durham, N.C., connected on the first goal of the game at the 16:42 mark of the first period off a great feed from redshirt junior defender
Ashley Rape. Pathman was able to beat the Tribe defender on the left side of the box, drove near the left post and hit the back of the net.
The Blue Devils played a total of 26 student-athletes on Saturday, including seven freshmen. Neither team scored in the second 30-minute session.
In the third period, William & Mary evened the match as Diana Weigel found Mallory Schaffer for a header past Blue Devil goalkeeper
Emily Nahas. Duke came back less than three minutes later with its second goal of the match. Sophomore
Alex Straton stepped from her defensive slot to take a ball away and then made a great feed from the left side of the box to sophomore
Kaitlyn Kerr, who redirected the ball into the net.
With Duke leading 2-1 in the fourth period, William & Mary was able to even the match with less than three minutes remaining as Carson Scott found Erin Liberatore, who blasted a 25-yard shot into the top of the net.
“I was very happy at times and at other times I wasn't as happy as we could be,” said Duke Head Coach
Robbie Church on the match. “We were spotty and it is early obviously -- it is Aug. 13. I thought we came out and played really well early. The first 30 minutes we were very sharp -- we had some nice combinations, we had some nice build-up all over the field. We got a goal but we didn't get a second or third goal, which is obviously so important. We created opportunities, but we didn't finish those opportunities. It kept them around for them to score a late goal to tie the game. It is a tough lesson to learn, but I am glad we learned it in this game instead of the real game.”
For the match, Duke outshot William & Mary, 22-7, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Leading the Blue Devils in shots were Kerr, Weinberg,
Avery Rape and
Chelsea Canepa with three each.
“There is a lot to be optimistic about and there are some things we need to get back on the practice field to tune up and perfect a little bit,” said
Ashley Rape. “We definitely need to put 90 minutes together. We came out and set the tone the first 30 minutes, but there was an obvious drop from there. Putting an even game together on a consistent level will be big going forward and for Friday.”
In goal for the Blue Devils, junior
Tara Campbell started and played the first 30-minute period without allowing a goal. Redshirt freshman
Meghan Thomas came in for the second period and didn't allow a goal, while making one save. Nahas started the third period and allowed one goal, while freshman
Ali Kershner came in towards the end of the third period and allowed the second goal during the overtime.
Katherine Yount, Carla Manger, Jane Aman and Krista Quicker all played in goal for the Tribe and combined for 13 saves.
The 2011 season will officially kick off for the Blue Devils on Friday, Aug. 19 against Army at 7:00 p.m. The Blue Devils will then host 21st-ranked South Carolina on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2:00 p.m. Duke features 10 home contests this season with all matches being played at Koskinen Stadium.
“We have a lot of things to work on both offensively and defensively and on set plays,” commented Church. “We will be ready to play on Friday night.”
