DURHAM, N.C.— Prior to heading home following the second session of summer school, GoDuke.com caught up with Duke women's basketball sophomore
Chloe Wells to chat about her summer, going back to California and playing in the Durham Pro-Am.
Wells, who is a product of Colton, Calif., saw action in all 36 games, including starting the first five games of the season at point guard. She averaged 3.5 points and dished 62 assists on the season. She drained 13 treys on the year.
Duke returns eight letterwinners and welcomes the No. 1 ranked recruiting class in the nation for the second straight year under Head Coach
Joanne P. McCallie in 2011-12. The Blue Devils posted a 32-4 overall record last season, won the ACC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight.
GoDuke.com: How has this summer gone?
Chloe Wells: I think it went great, as far as the team wise, we worked out hard. We went out together -- we did a lot of team bonding, including more than last summer, so the chemistry is there. As far as what we did in the weight room and running, it was way more intense this year.
GoDuke.com: Do you think you're in better shape this summer?
CW: Yeah, we did more as far as speed work, so that was good for both speed and conditioning. So I feel good in that area and as far as in the weight room, I went up five pounds on my max, so I feel pretty good and confident about that.
GoDuke.com: What things have you been trying to work on in your game?
CW: Being able to just go -- fly down the court and push the ball, change the momentum when I come in. First up my teammates get off and then that's when I come in as far as scoring or whatever needs to be done, just adding that to the game.
GoDuke.com: How excited are you to move forward to your sophomore year and show what you can do?
CW: I am very excited. I mean with those three seniors gone there's a lot of playing time left out there, so it's anybody's ball game. I think that gives everybody else that extra pressure to step it up, it's time to shine and show what you can do.
GoDuke.com: How was the Pro Am experience?
CW: It was fun. Kind of competitive -- some of the teams were pretty stacked, but as far as just showing what you can do and having fun it was good to do.
GoDuke.com: What do you plan on doing in your last few weeks of vacation in California?
CW: Eating a lot, shopping, going to the beach, hanging out with family and friends, but I'm still going to make sure I get up early and get my lifts and get my runs in.
GoDuke.com: How do you think the team is gelling going into your sophomore season and having the leaders step up?
CW: I think we have seen leadership in so many different people. It is bringing the best out of everybody -- lowerclassmen and upperclassmen. We have a lot of injured people so it's kind of hard to be as one, but we're doing our best. On the court we are pushing, we're calling people out there going, if they're not giving it their all. Off the court we are hanging out, we are going to the beach, going out to eat; we're doing what we can to just keep the team together.
