DURHAM, N.C. - Seniors Kayla Kirk and Sophia Dunworth were nearly unstoppable during the morning session of the Duke Invitational and led No. 17 Duke to a 3-0 sweep over Charleston Southern on Saturday morning in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Kirk had the best match of her career, amassing a career-high nine kills and four service aces as the Blue Devils (2-0) routed the Buccaneers. Kirk did her damage in just two sets and finished 9-for-14 with a .571 hitting percentage. Dunworth led Duke with 10 kills on 13 attacks and was one dig shy of recording a double-double.
Duke dominated in all facets of the game, hitting .507 as a team with 43 kills and just five errors. Freshman setter Kelsey Williams stepped in midway through the second set and contributed 16 assists and a .667 set percentage in place of senior All-America Kellie Catanach, who added 17 assists in her two games.
Charleston Southern had trouble getting past Duke's block, hitting just .071 as a team as the Blue Devils put back nine blocks. Dunworth and sophomore Chelsea Cook had four of those stops apiece while Amanda Robertson and Catanach were each in on three putbacks.
Duke led by as much as 10 points in the opening frame and used outside hitters Dunworth and Jeme Obeime to secure a 25-15 win. Obeime went 4-for-8 in the opener, and Catanach directed Duke to a .375 hitting percentage.
Kirk went off in the second set, knocking down five kills and closing out the 25-12 win with three straight service aces. The senior outside hitter hit an even .500 for the game as the Blue Devils hit .429 as a team and amassed four more blocks. Charleston Southern also had trouble stopping Robertson, who was 3-for-3, and Dunworth who converted both of her attacks
Charleston Southern failed to reach double digits in the finale as the Duke defense held the Buccaneers to just six kills for the set. The Blue Devils totaled 17 kills thanks to Williams, who saw 14 of her 20 sets go down for kills. Thanks to the defense of libero Ali McCurdy and defensive specialist Nailah Waterfield, Duke gave up only its second service ace of the entire match in set three.
