DURHAM, N.C. - Jeme Obeime knocked down 14 kills, and 23rd-ranked Duke used a stifling defense to take down Campbell 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-18) on Tuesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Obeime, a freshman outside hitter, hit .400 for the match and was All-America setter Kellie Catanach's favorite target with a team-high 25 attacks. Obeime, who leads Duke in kills this season, has played in every set this year and contributed at least seven kills in every match.
Catanach racked up 41 assists and recorded her team-leading fifth double-double of the year with 11 digs. Under her direction, classmates Amanda Robertson and Sophia Dunworth combined for 19 kills and eight total Blue Devils recorded a kill. Included in that group was freshman Brittney Balser, who went 4-for-8 and set career highs in kills and hitting percentage.
While Obeime and Catanach guided the offense, ACC digs leader Ali McCurdy anchored a Duke defense that held the Fighting Camels (4-8) to a .057 hitting percentage. McCurdy picked up 16 digs - including nine in the first set - as Campbell managed just 20 kills in the three-set affair. Defensive specialist Nailah Waterfield backed up McCurdy and held Campbell's serving game in check with 10 errorless receptions.
McCurdy also chipped in a pair of service aces as Duke (5-3) used a tough serve to keep Campbell off balance. Campbell sided out at 47 percent for the match while Duke countered with a 66 percent clip.
The win gives Duke 36 consecutive victories over unranked teams in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke's last home loss to a team not ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll came three seasons ago on Sept. 25, 2008.
Megan Hendrickson, Obeime and McCurdy carried Duke to a 25-18 win in the first set. Obeime was almost perfect, connecting on five of her six attacks as Duke totaled 18 kills in the opener, while Hendrickson was Duke's most active attacker with five kills on 16 attacks. McCurdy shut down the Camel offense with nine digs as Campbell hit just .027 with five kills. Campbell still managed to hang with Duke until midway through the match when the Blue Devils opened a slim 15-13 lead with a 5-2 run. From there, kills from Robertson and Hendrickson and an ace from McCurdy closed out the victory.
Catanach opened up the Duke offense and game two and directed the unit to a .412 hitting percentage on the strength of 16 kills and just two attack errors. Obeime stayed hot with five more kills as Duke once again broke away midway through the match. With a slim 12-11 lead, Duke went on a 12-5 run and scored seven straight points to reach set point. Obeime closed out the win with her team-leading 10th kill of the night. Megan Hendrickson, Amanda Robertson and Sophia Dunworth were all errorless in set two, combining to finish 8-for-16 with no errors.
Duke took control in game three and got significant contributions from the bench. Balser, in only her fifth set of the year, went 4-for-8 attacking with two digs, and sophomore Chelsea Cook contributed two kills. Despite hitting into her first two attack errors of the year, Cook's .435 hitting percentage is still the highest of any Blue Devil.
Duke will open ACC play this Friday against Wake Forest at the Black & Gold Challenge in Winston-Salem, N.C. Duke has opened its ACC slate against the Demon Deacons in three of the past four seasons and is 3-0 in those showings.
