FRANKLIN, Tenn. - After not getting any putts to drop in the first round on Friday, the seventh-ranked Duke women's golf team got the flat stick going on Saturday as the Blue Devils carded a two-under-par, 286, to jump from tied for 12th to tied for fifth overall at the Mason Rudolph Fall Preview.
As a team, Duke has registered rounds of 304 and 286 for a 36-hole total of 590 at the 6,451-yard, par 72 Vanderbilt Legends Club in Fanklin, Tenn. UCLA leads the event with a two-day total of 579, while Alabama (585), North Carolina (588), Arizona State (589), Duke (590), Virginia (590), Southern California (592), Vanderbilt (593), Texas A&M (596) and California (596) rounding out the top 10.
"We did the same thing today as we did yesterday," commented Head Coach Dan Brooks. "The only difference is some things came together and we stayed really patient. I would like to think that is what has characterized us as a team in the past is constant patience. We are starting to do that and it is pretty neat to see."
All four counting golfers for the Blue Devils -- Lindy Duncan, Laetitia Beck, Irene Jung and Stacey Kim -- turned in fewer than 30 putts on the day. In Friday's first round, no Duke golfer had less than 32 putts. As a team, Duke fired 18 birdies in the round with zero double or triple-bogeys.
Duncan, a junior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., collected a 69 on Saturday to move from 27th overall to tied for fifth with a two-day total of 144. The Blue Devils started their day on the back nine and Duncan was on fire early with four birdies on No. 12, No. 16, No. 17 and No. 18 as she made the turn at four-under-par. With bogeys on the first and third holes, Duncan dropped back to two-under with six holes left. She closed with a birdie, bogey and birdie to finish with a 69. On the day, Duncan had 28 putts, while hitting 14 greens and 11 fairways.
After totaling a 76 on day one, Beck carded a two-under-par, 70, on day two as she jumped to tied for 15th individually with a 146. Out of Caesarea, Israel, Beck collected five birdies on the day, which three came on par five holes. She hit 12 fairways, 13 greens and had 29 putts in her round.
With a team-best and career-best 26 putts, Jung posted a one-over 73 to move to a tie for 34th overall with a 146. A freshman from Bedford , Nova Scotia, Canada, Jung made the turn at one-under-par, but had three bogeys over her first six holes on the back nine. She closed birdie, bogey, birdie on the final three holes to finish with a 73. Jung hit 11 fairways and eight greens on Saturday.
A day after carding an 81, Kim showed what talent she has posting a 74 on day two. Kim, a product of Columbus, Ga., rolled in two birdies on the day -- both coming on par threes. She hit 12 fairways, nine greens and had 28 putts.
Sophomore Alejandra Cangrejo closed the day with a 76 and is tied for 59th overall with a 154. A native of Bogota, Colombia, Cangrejo struggled on the front nine shooting a five-over, 41, but was only one-over on the back. She didn't register a birdie as she had 34 putts, hit nine greens and nine fairways.
Duke will tee off on Sunday in the final round beginning at 10:30 a.m., along with Florida and Arizona State.
