DURHAM, N.C. -- Headlined by the third annual Rod Myers Invitational, head coach Jamie Green announced the 2012-13 Duke men's golf schedule on Monday. The Blue Devils will once again play a challenging slate of tournaments, including three events in the state of North Carolina.
"We try to blend our schedule so our guys get to see different parts of the country and play against the strongest competition," said Green. "We want to test the waters and see where our games are going to be and what we need to be doing to be competitive at the end of the year. The guys are going to be seeing some great golf courses that some people just don't get a chance to see. We go to Olympia Fields and Cypress Point and if they just did that it would be a great experience. So when you get to add on to it playing here in North Carolina and hosting our own event it is a really special schedule."
Duke opens the fall season Sept. 15-16 at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill. The Blue Devils then play in the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational (Sept. 30 - Oct. 2) before hosting the Rod Myers Invitational (Oct. 13-14).
The RMI will feature 36 holes of golf on Saturday with an 18-hole final round slated for Sunday. The event is named after the late Rod Myers, a coaching legend at Duke from 1973-2007. Duke is joined in the tournament field by Baylor, Charlotte, East Carolina, Iowa (2010 RMI champion), Liberty, North Carolina,, N.C. State, Northwestern, Pacific and Tulsa.
"Hosting the Rod Myers Invitational in itself is beyond special, not just within the team, but in this community and around the country," added Green. "To continue Rod's legacy and remember him in a way that we know he would love with a first class event on a demanding and great golf course with the best teams that we could have in here. We are honored to host the event and happy to have Nancy Myers and her family back supporting it."
The Blue Devils close out the fall season at the United States Collegiate Championship (Oct. 19-21) and Stanford Classic at Cypress Point (Oct. 29-30).
Duke opens the spring season with trips to the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational (Feb. 24-26), Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters (March 8-10) and Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate (March 24-26). The team will also play in the Aggie Invitational (April 6-7) for the first time in College Station, Texas, before taking on the Old North State Club in the 2012 ACC Championship (April 26-28).
NCAA Regional Championship play will take place from May 16-18 with sites in Baton Rouge, La.; Tallahassee, Fla.; Columbus, Ohio; Fayetteville, Ark.; Pullman, Wash.; and Tempe, Ariz. The top five finishers at each regional site advance to the 2012 NCAA Championship (May 28 - June 2) at the Capital City Club - Crabapple Course in Alpharetta, Ga.
