DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke volleyball team is set to host its second tournament of the season as the Duke Classic kicks off Friday, September 7 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils (5-1, 0-0 ACC) start their weekend competition with Elon Friday at 7 p.m., then face East Carolina Saturday at 10 a.m., before closing out the tournament against Northeastern Saturday at 7 p.m.
Duke returns home this upcoming weekend after posting a 2-1 record at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. The Blue Devils dropped their first match of the year to reigning BIG EAST regular season champion Louisville, but rebounded with two wins to close out the tournament Saturday. Led by ACC Freshman of the Week Emily Sklar, the Blue Devils knocked off Marshall and 2011 Southern Conference champion Samford on their final day in the Bluegrass State.
Sklar picked up her second straight ACC Freshman of the week honor after averaging 4.20 kills per set at the Cardinal Classic and joined junior libero Ali McCurdy in all-tournament team honors. Duke also received solid performances from senior middle blocker Christiana Gray, sophomore outside hitter Jeme Obeime and sophomore setter Maggie Deichmeister.
McCurdy, the 2011 ACC Defensive Player of the Year, anchored the Duke defense yet again with 51 digs over the weekend. The junior from Tampa, Fla., currently leads the ACC, averaging 5.42 digs per set. Hitting .417 on the season, Gray leads the Blue Devils and also ranks fifth in the conference, while Obeime's 62 kills on the season trail only Sklar's total of 75.
The Blue Devils now turn their attention to a new challenge in their three opponents this weekend. Duke and Elon, a member of the Southern Conference, last met in 2004 with the Blue Devils securing a 3-0 (30-16, 30-21, 30-20) victory in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke holds a 10-7 advantage over the Phoenix, who is 4-4 on the year after a 3-2 win over Radford this past Tuesday, in the all-time series.
The Blue Devils first met current Conference USA member East Carolina back in 1972 and have posted a 27-13 record against the Pirates since that initial meeting. The two teams last met in 2007, a 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-22) win for the Blue Devils. ECU enters the weekend with a 1-5 overall record after dropping matches to Southeast Missouri, Bradley and UW-Milwaukee at the Milwaukee Invitational.
Northeastern and Duke meet for the first time in program history Saturday evening. The Huskies, who were picked to capture the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association title, posted a 2-2 record at the UCSB Invitational last week and enter the Duke Classic with a 6-2 overall mark.
Live stats will be available for all six matches this weekend, and the Blue Devil Network will provide live video coverage of Saturday's match between Duke and Northeastern.
Following this weekend's tournament, Duke travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., for the Coke/Michigan Invitational Friday through Saturday, September 14-15. The Blue Devils open conference competition against N.C. State the following Friday, September 21.
