NEW ORLEANS – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named graduate student Juliet Bottorff National Athlete of the Week Monday, Sept. 23, following the Newark, Del., native's convincing win Friday, Sept. 20, at the 20th running of the Adidas XC Challenge in Cary, N.C.
A 2012 cross country All-American, Bottorff averaged a 5:18 per mile pace over 3.1 miles to earn a course record of 16:28.81 on the WakeMed Soccer Campus cross country course. Bottorff led a competitive field, including 2013 Outdoor 10,000-meters All-American Joanna Thompson of No. 21 NC State. Bottorff built a lead that resulted in a 27-second gap between herself and the second-place finisher, Thompson, and a 46-second gap between first place and third place. Bottorff's time eclipsed her previous personal record of 16:58.94 by over 30 seconds.
Bottorff concluded the 2012 cross country season with a 27th-place finish at the NCAA Championship meet and a second-place finish at the Southeast Region Championships. Bottorff also earned All-ACC honors with a third-place showing at the conference meet.
Duke's women's cross country team travels to South Bend, Ind. Friday, Oct. 4, to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
