
Duke Perfect In Singles In Day Two Of Regional

CARY, N.C. – The Duke men's tennis team continued its strong play at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional on Friday at the Cary Tennis Park. The Blue Devils played Round of 32 singles as well as Round of 64 and Round of 32 doubles on Friday. Duke had all four of its remaining singles players move on to Saturday's main draw Round of 16 while two doubles teams advanced to Saturday's Round of 16.
Senior Jason Tahir defeated UNC Greensboro's Randy Phillips 6-4, 6-3 to move to the Round of 16. Tahir will face North Carolina's Jack Murray at 9 a.m. ET Saturday.
Freshman Nicolas Alvarez, the No. 9 seed in the draw, fought through a first-set defeat to come back and beat N.C. State's Nicky Horton 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. Alvarez will face No. 6 seed Austin Powell of N.C. State at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Senior Raphael Hemmeler continued his successful run with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph over N.C. State's Simon Norenius. Hemmeler will play Christian Seraphim of Wake Forest for the right to advance to the quarterfinals at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Sophomore TJ Pura completed the Blue Devils' perfect singles day with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Wake Forest's Jonathan Ho. Pura has a difficult task Saturday in the Round of 16, facing No. 2 seed Ronnie Schneider of North Carolina.
Saturday if any of the four win, they will advance to the quarterfinals, also played on Saturday morning.
In doubles action, redshirt senior Cale Hammond and Tahir moved to the Round of 32 with an 8-2 victory against Winthrop's Michael Chen and JD O'Brien and to the Round of 16 by topping Appalachian State's Zach Bost and Ollie Casey 8-6. Hammond and Tahir will face UNC-Wilmington's Javier Restrepo and Andrew Torres around 2 p.m. Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals.
Alvarez and Hemmeler, the No. 4 seed, took down Coastal Carolina's Rick Timmerman and Vuk Velikovic 8-4 in the Round of 64 before defeating UNC-Wilmington's Taylor Cramer and Xander Veyes 8-2. The Blue Devil pair plays Clemson's Austin Ansair and Luke Johnson around 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner will move on to the quarterfinals.
Junior Josh Levine and Pura dropped their Round of 64 match 8-4 to Elon's Stefan Fortmann and Brian Kowalaski. In the consolation round, Levine and Pura won in a walkover against N.C. A&T's Bailey Joshua and Princeton Perry.
Junior Daniel McCall teamed up with classmate Bruno Semenzato and the pair suffered a narrow 8-7 (5) setback to Elon's Jordan Kaufman and Joshua Luck in the opening round. McCall and Semenzato defeated Wofford's Rob Galloway and Haris Poric 8-7 (3) in the consolation match.
