
Tahir To Play For Regional Championship Monday

CARY, N.C. – Duke's men's tennis team moved one step closer to sending a second competitor to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Sunday as senior Jason Tahir will play in the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional singles final on Monday. The Blue Devils came close to adding to the total as senior Raphael Hemmeler lost in the semifinals in singles and doubles.
Tahir, the No. 4 seed in the draw, downed Blue Devil freshman Nicolas Alvarez, the No. 9 seed in the draw, who retired when the match was tied 1-1, to advance to Monday's championship.
Hemmeler faced No. 1 seed Brayden Schnur of North Carolina and dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision. Hemmeler led 4-3 in the opening set before Schnur won three consecutive games.
Tahir and Schnur will play for the regional title at 1 p.m. ET Monday.
In doubles, Alvarez and Hemmeler, the No. 4 seed, opened the quarterfinals against North Carolina's Esben Hess-Olesen and Maik Uhrich. The Blue Devil pair took a commanding 7-0 lead before winning 8-2.
Once in the semifinals, the format changed to a best-of-two match with a third-set tiebreaker to 10 points. Alvarez and Hemmeler earned a 6-4 victory in the opening set against N.C. State's Ian Dempster and Robbie Mudge. In the second set, the pairs were tied 3-3 before the Blue Devils jumped out to a 5-4 advantage. Dempster and Mudge fought back and reeled off three consecutive games to win the second set 7-5. The teams went to the tiebreaker and were tied 2-2 before the Wolfpack tallied eight straight points to win 10-2 and take the match 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (2).
In other Duke doubles action, redshirt senior Cale Hammond and Tahir faced No. 1 seed Schnur and Brett Clark of North Carolina in the quarterfinals and suffered a narrow 8-7 (4) defeat. The pairs were tied 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7. The Tar Heels took a quick 2-0 lead in the tiebreaker before Duke responded to tie it at 2-2. North Carolina closed it out with a 5-2 run to end the match.
