TULSA, Okla. – Duke sent three players into action Thursday in the main draw of the ITA All-American Championships and freshman Nicolas Alvarez earned a win for the Blue Devils and advanced to the second round. Duke's three participants in the main draw were tied for the most by a single institution at the event.
Alvarez, who was the last Blue Devil to play Thursday, turned in the squad's lone victory, against California's Andre Goransson. Alvarez played his fourth match in four days after punching his ticket to the main draw with a straight-set victory in the final round of qualifying on Wednesday. Alvarez jumped out to a quick lead with a 6-0 triumph in the first set. He dropped the second 6-3 before responding with a 6-2 win in the third set to take the match. Alvarez will face Illinois' Jared Hiltzik in the second around at approximately 11:30 a.m. ET Friday. Hiltzik is the No. 5 overall seed in the main draw.
Starting the day's action for Duke was senior Jason Tahir, the only Blue Devil to have been placed directly into the main draw. Alvarez and junior Bruno Semenzato earned their way into the main draw based on success in the qualifying rounds. Tahir dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (5) decision to Virginia Tech's Andreas Bjerrehus. Tahir will now be placed into the consolation bracket.
Semenzato took on Louisville's Sebastian Stiefelmeyer and won the first set 6-4 before falling 6-2 and 6-0 in the second and third sets.
In the consolation bracket, Semenzato will face Memphis' Connor Glennon and Tahir will face Tennessee's Mikelis Libietis around 10 a.m. Friday.
