CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 25th-ranked Duke volleyball team swept its second-straight ACC opponent as the Blue Devils defeated Virginia 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-18) Friday evening at Memorial Gymnasium.
“We're really pleased to be able to go on the road and get an ACC win tonight,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “The team worked hard out there. We served well and we played strong defense in order to be successful. We executed on the serve better and better as the match went on.”
Sophomore Jordan Tucker knocked down 12 kills without committing an attack error on 18 attempts. Tucker's .667 hitting percentage paced a Blue Devil squad which registered a .307 clip for the match, Duke's fifth straight hitting over .300 as a team. The Duke defense, led by libero Sasha Karelov's 20 digs, held Virginia to a .182 hitting percentage. Karelov, the ACC leader in digs per set, now has 20 or more digs in a contest six times this season.
“Jordan was really effective,” Nagel said. “She was able to really get in there and call for the ball a lot, so that was great. She worked really hard out there, a lot of our hitters did. I liked how our defense had 65 digs to their 31. Plus I think our serving started it all off for us. That was a big help.”
Senior outside hitter Jeme Obeime led all players with 13 kills. Fellow outside hitter Emily Sklar added nine kills and nine digs in a well-rounded Duke effort. Senior setter Kelsey Williams finished a dig shy of her third-consecutive double-double, totaling 40 assists and nine digs.
Outside hitters Tori Janowski and Jasmine Burton paced Virginia with 10 kills each.
Duke shrugged off a slow start to the first set, which saw the Blue Devils commit four errors over the first six points, to win the frame, 25-23. Breanna Atkinson and Tucker teamed up for eight kills without an error, while Karelov was outstanding with eight digs. After rallying from a 5-1 deficit to tie the score at eight-all, Duke traded points with Virginia down the stretch. Virginia eked ahead, 23-22, but Duke got an Atkinson kill, a Sklar block and a UVa attack error to take the 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils never trailed in the second set and ultimately won it, 25-18. Tucker continued to be a force, dropping six kills in the set. Duke's lead sat at just one point, 14-13, before a 4-1 spurt gave the Blue Devils control of the frame. Virginia narrowed the margin to 18-16, but Duke countered with a Tucker kill and Chloe DiPasquale ace. Kills by Alyse Whitaker and Sklar sealed the victory and the 2-0 Duke advantage.
DiPasquale ended the night with three aces, marking her team-leading fourth match of the season with three or more service aces.
Duke hit .414 in the third and final frame, which the Blue Devils captured, 25-18. Up 10-4 following a Virginia service error, Duke maintained the six-point cushion and enjoyed a 19-13 margin following an Obeime kill. The Cavaliers would make things interesting late, rattling off five-straight points to narrow the margin to 19-18. Obeime ended UVa's rally with a kill and the Cavaliers committed four attack errors late to help seal the match.
Next up, the Blue Devils travel to Notre Dame for the second of four-straight road matches. First serve between the Blue Devils and the Irish is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 5.
