TULSA, Okla. – Duke's participation in the ITA All-American Championship came to an end Saturday, but not until after freshman Nicolas Alvarez advanced to the quarterfinals of the main draw and junior Bruno Semenzato moved to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket.
Alvarez became the first Blue Devil to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championship since current head coach Ramsey Smith and teammate Marko Cerenko in 2000. As a result of the quarterfinal appearance, Alvarez qualifies for the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., from Nov. 6-9.
Alvarez began the day with a three-set victory against South Florida's Roberto Cid in the main draw's round of 16. Alvarez took the first set 6-3 before Cid came back from a 5-3 deficit in the second set to capture a 7-5 victory. Alvarez responded in the third set with a 6-4 triumph to take the match and move to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Alvarez was matched up against the event's No. 2 seed in USC's Yannick Hanfmann. Hanfmann cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory to eliminate Alvarez.
Semenzato started the day in the round of 16 of the consolation bracket and took on Tennessee's Hunter Reese. Semenzato coasted to a 6-4, 6-2 victory to move on to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket. There, Semenzato faced Ohio State's Chris Diaz and dropped a three-set decision. Diaz won the first set 6-2 before Semenzato marched back to take a tough second set 7-6 (5). Diaz took the deciding set 6-3 to win the match and eliminate Semenzato.
Duke returns to action next Friday by splitting the team into two tournaments. Part of the Blue Devils will take part in the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco while the other part will play in the Wake Forest Fall Invitational.
