Duke Head Coach David CutcliffeOverall thoughts on the game:“I don't know if there are words that fit how you feel. I told the team after the game, I said 'First thing I don't want you to forget is all this winning that has led us to a Thursday night opportunity on national television playing your arch rival. Obviously it was a disaster from our standpoint. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves. That doesn't work and there is no need. We're going to learn from it. They beat us in every aspect of the game. We have to accept that. We don't like it. You get better and do something about it.”
On getting ready for Wake Forest:“We're going to work in the morning. We'll have a team meeting with our players. We'll work as a staff and start getting ourselves ready. We need a few days to heal. We've played three games in 13 days. That hasn't gone unnoticed by me. I'm not sure we're just not out of gas. So I'm going to let the players have Saturday off. We're going to have meetings Sunday. I'm not going to overdo things Sunday, but we've got to just dive into this thing and get ourselves ready. Wake Forest has to play Saturday so it will be a chance to see that game. Not in person of course, but see it on TV and get it on tape. We have a chance to win nine games and I'm not going to let that be lost. There are not a lot of college football teams in the big five that have a chance to still win nine games and we need to take great pride in that and bounce ourselves back. Our seniors have a chance to go 2-0. We have a two-game season. We know that now. We don't know where the second game is going to be, but this is a two-game season that this team needs to go 2-0 in. That's the focus.”
On team having a chance to go 9-3 and win a bowl game:“I think our seniors – when I talked to them and I talked a little more than I normally would and do after games for obvious reasons—it's important to our seniors. These guys have put too much into this program and earned their way to this platform. So we're going to come out of this battling and fighting and being true to ourselves. We're going to do what we do and what we believe in. We didn't suddenly forget how to play football or coach football. We didn't play nor coach or do anything well tonight, but we can. And we know we're going to have two more football games and a lot of people don't have that these days. I'm excited about what lies ahead.”
Duke Quarterback Anthony BooneOn falling behind in the game early:“We made mistakes early. They capitalized on our mistakes. We usually play mistake-free football, taking care of the football on offense, and they did a good job of capitalizing and creating turnovers. It takes away from the run game. Obviously you have to try and chunk away at the lead as fast as possible, which means drop back and pass. They knew that, and they dropped more guys in coverage and schemed up some blitzes.”
On refocusing and preparing for Wake Forest:“It's my last game in Wallace Wade Stadium coming up. I know we have a whole weekend to get this game behind us. A good chance to get away from Durham and Duke a little bit. Some guys from the local area can go home, relax and refresh their minds and get ready for Wake Forest. We'd like to end our season on top. Obviously, the last two seasons we've gone out losing at the end, so we're going to try to bounce back and try to finish strong with two games left. That's our mentality right now.”
Duke Defensive End Dezmond JohnsonOn falling behind early in the game:“We started off putting ourselves in a big bind in the first quarter, getting down big, and anytime you play a great team like UNC, you can't let that happen. They took advantage of our turnovers and the quick lead that they built.”
On the play of North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams:“We knew coming in that Marquise is a great quarterback, and he was going to make plays. That's what he did tonight. He came out and made plays for his team and put them in a position to win.”
On moving forward to Wake Forest:“We need to go back and watch the film. It's going to hurt, but we have to look at our mistakes and see what we can fix for the next team coming in, Wake Forest. Our only focus is them now, learning about our mistakes and getting over them quick so we can come back ready to work on Sunday.”
North Carolina Head Coach Larry FedoraOpening Statement:"I think we finally put together a complete game in all three phases – offensively, defensively and special teams. Other than the three turnovers we had offensively, it couldn't have been a more solid game for us.”
On how prepared he thought the team was coming into the game:“These guys did a great job. They knew we had a short week. They prepared themselves, they did the little things that we asked them to do all week so that they would be ready to go, and they won. We thought the most physical team would win the game, and looking at that game, we were more physical.”
On if this was the type of team he expected this year:“It was a team that I expected to grow to. I didn't expect it early on because we were too young in too many places. I think you saw now that up front on the offensive line that these guys have started to gel and get better – 315 yards rushing. Even on the defensive front, holding them to 116 yards rushing, that's pretty dang good.”
On running back T.J. Logan's performance today:“He had 116 yards rushing on the day. He ran the ball extremely hard. The way he was spinning and breaking tackles. He did a nice job all the way around tonight.”
On the ability of the defense to step up after the three North Carolina fumbles:“It was huge. For the defense to go out there in those situations and hold them to no points after those three fumbles, that was big. And that gave a shot of adrenaline to the entire team.”
