FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing in front of friends and family, senior Jason Tahir opened the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship with a straight-set victory that pushed him into Friday's Round of 16 action.
The Rochester, N.Y., native earned a 6-2, 6-2 win against Denver's Henry Craig that allowed him to advance.
“Obviously this is a great start to the tournament for Jason today,” head coach Ramsey Smith said. “He stuck to his game plan and executed extremely well. This should give him a lot of confidence moving into the Round of 16 tomorrow.”
Tahir becomes the fourth Blue Devil since 2003 to reach the Round of 16 at the Indoor Championship, joining Ludovic Walter (2003 and 2005), Reid Carleton (2010) and Henrique Cunha (2010, 2011 and 2012).
In the Round of 16 Friday, Tahir will face Oklahoma's Axel Alvarez Llamas, the tournament's No. 6 seed. If Tahir earns a victory against Alvarez Llamas, Tahir will play again Friday in the quarterfinals.
Since 2003, Duke has had two players advance to the quarterfinals in tournament history with Walter (2003 and 2005) and Cunha (2011 and 2012).
