DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke field hockey team is headed to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship for the second-straight season, earning an at-large bid to the tournament Sunday evening as announced on the NCAA.com.
The seventh-ranked Blue Devils (12-6) will face BIG 10 Tournament champion Northwestern (16-6) in the NCAA first round Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. at North Carolina's Francis E. Henry Stadium in nearby Chapel Hill, N.C. The advancing team will go up against either the top-seeded Tar Heels, who will serve as the host for the regional, or the winner of a play-in contest between Atlantic-10 champion Richmond (12-9) and NorPac champion Liberty (13-7). The second round contest in Chapel Hill is slated for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16.
“I'm really proud of this team and the program for continuing a chase and a goal of winning a national championship,” said head coach Pam Bustin. “I give our three seniors a lot of credit, having played in last year's national championship game, and finding a way to lead a young team to another NCAA Tournament. Through the ups and downs of the season they kept persevering and now we're really excited that we have an opportunity to play and to be close to home.”
Duke and Northwestern will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the first time. The Wildcats lead the overall series between the two schools by a 3-2 margin.
The Blue Devils are 18-12 historically in NCAA Tournament play and have received bids to the postseason event 13 times in program history, including three out of the past four years under Bustin's watch. Duke reached the title match for the fourth time last season following previous trips in 2003, 2004 and 2005, and has also totaled five national semifinal appearances. The program is 9-3 all-time in first round contests and under the direction of Bustin, has compiled a 3-2 NCAA Tournament ledger with trips to the championship match and the quarterfinals.
The Blue Devils hosted the 2014 ACC Field Hockey Championship as the tournament's No. 7 seed and fell to second-seeded and top-ranked North Carolina in overtime in the quarterfinals, 2-1. The squad placed three players on the 2014 All-ACC Teams, with redshirt goalkeeper Lauren Blazing and junior midfielder Aileen Johnson receiving first team recognition and senior midfielder Abby Beltrani garnering second team honors.
