COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado -- After earning gold at the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup earlier this summer, the USA Basketball's Board of Directors named the 2014 USA Men's World Cup team, led by Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, co-recipient of the 2014 USA Basketball Team of the Year award. The announcement, which came on Monday, tabbed the USA Women's World Championship co-recipients of the same honor. Beginning in 1996, the USA Basketball's Board of Directors has named a Team of the Year each of the last 19 seasons.
“USA Basketball is proud to recognize the accomplishments of the USA Men's World Cup and USA Women's World Championship teams and to honor them as the 2014 USA Basketball co-Teams of the Year,” said USA Basketball CEO/Executive Director Jim Tooley. “In addition to playing basketball at the highest level, these athletes and coaches demonstrated impressive sportsmanship and teamwork that led to tremendous success. We are very grateful for their commitment and dedication.”
During the FIBA Basketball World Cup competition, the men's national team posted a perfect 9-0 record en route to winning gold at the event held in Bilbao, Barcelona and Madrid, Spain. The USA won the event in impressive fashion, defeating teams by a 33.0 points per game margin, the most by a U.S. men's team in FIBA Basketball World Cup or Olympic Games since the 1994 Worlds (37.8).
“I think the most special thing about this team was the experience as a whole,” said Krzyzewski. “In other words, where we started from, with injury, with people with contracts or personal issues that were not able to attend. The prediction was not one of victory, and where it turned out was at the completely other end of the spectrum. And the journey was the best one we've had, I think. I loved it. I love our staff, and we became a very, very close team.”
Former Blue Devils Kyrie Irving and Mason Plumlee reunited with Krzyzewski on the men's national team. Irving earned MVP honors and helped guide Team USA to consecutive FIBA World Cup titles, making the United States just the third team in FIBA Basketball World Cup history to win back-to-back world cup championships.
USA Basketball, a nonprofit organization that serves as the governing body for both the men's and women's basketball teams in the United States, is based out of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The organization is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA-sponsored international competitions.
