DURHAM, N.C.—With the spring men's soccer schedule getting underway Friday night at Wake Forest, head coach John Kerr already knows what lies ahead for the Blue Devils in the fall of 2014. Duke will host 11 games, including annual ACC foes North Carolina and Notre Dame.
Duke's schedule features the reigning NCAA Champion, two College Cup teams and seven NCAA Tournament squads overall.
The Blue Devils open the 2014 campaign with a trio of exhibition games before officially kicking off the season with the John Rennie/Nike Classic Aug. 29. Duke will host Stetson and Loyola Marymount in the opening weekend.
It will be the first meeting with Stetson since 1985, while Loyola Marymount and Duke will face each other for the first time in the programs' histories. LMU is coming off a good season, finishing 13-4-3 and advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Stanford in a penalty kick shootout.
Duke will hit the road for the first time for a Sept. 5 contest at Southern Methodist. The Mustangs and Blue Devils last met in 2011 in Durham with SMU coming away with a 1-0 overtime victory.
The first midweek game comes against Temple Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. Duke is 2-0-0 all-time against the Owls with consecutive wins in 2004 and 2005. Four days later, the Blue Devils open ACC play at its newest member Louisville at 7 p.m. Led by former Blue Devil Ken Lolla, Louisville is 1-1-1 against Duke with the most recently contest being a 0-0 draw in Durham in 2010.
The back and forth schedule continues with a short trip to UNC Wilmington Sept. 23 before returning home to host ACC foe Boston College Sept. 26 and non-conference opponent Appalachian State Sept. 30.
Arguably the toughest road stretch for the Blue Devils comes over the next two weeks as Duke travels to Wake Forest Oct. 3 and Virginia Oct. 10. Wake Forest is coming off of a 9-5-5 season in which it advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round. The Demon Deacons are 14-23-6 overall and have not beaten Duke since 2009. Virginia, coming off of its 11th College Cup appearance, owns a two-game win streak over Duke and has the narrow 39-37-8 edge in the overall series.
Duke returns home to host non-conference rival Davidson Oct. 14. The Blue Devils and Wildcats have faced each other in each of the past eight seasons with Duke dominating that stretch 7-1. Duke rallied for a 3-2 overtime victory at Davidson in 2013.
The Blue Devils welcome reigning NCAA Champion Notre Dame Oct. 17. Duke faced the Fighting Irish twice in 2013, dropping hard-fought 3-1 and 1-0 games. A short trip to Elon awaits Duke Oct. 21 The Phoenix are coming off one of its most memorable seasons after advancing to the NCAA Tournament second round and going 15-4-2 overall. Duke has never lost to Elon, sporting a 9-0-3 record against the Phoenix.
Pittsburgh visits Koskinen Stadium Oct. 24 in the ACC home finale for the Blue Devils, while Duke closes out its overall home schedule with Georgia State Oct. 28. It will be third time in the past four seasons Duke and Georgia State will meet. The Blue Devils are a perfect 5-0-0 against the Panthers.
The regular season ends on Halloween night at Virginia Tech. Duke is riding a five-game win streak against the Hokies with the last loss coming in 2004.
The ACC Tournament gets underway Nov. 6 with quarterfinal games at campus sites. The ACC semifinals and championship are set for Nov. 14 and 16th, respectively.
