Track and Field Set to Open Outdoor Season at UNC

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke men's and women's track and field teams open the 2014 outdoor season Friday, March 21, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for a two-day competition at the Carolina Relays. A number of Duke track and field members make their 2014 debuts, while others return to competition following successful indoor campaigns.

A redshirt last season, Shannon Sullivan begins her 2014 outdoor season as Duke's top javelin thrower in 2012. Sullivan, entered in the javelin Saturday, won the 2012 ACC javelin title after posting a distance of 159-2.00 (48.51). Sullivan's mark currently ranks second on Duke's all-time list.

Duke's record holder in the men's hammer throw, sophomore Michael Foley returns to the event after competing in his first indoor season as a member of Duke's track and field team. During the indoor season, Foley earned a 10th-place finish in the weight throw at the conference championships. The Paradise Valley, Ariz., native secured a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw at last season's ACC Championships and looks to build on his success las year as a freshman.

In the women's hammer throw, redshirt senior Michelle Anumba is set to compete in the event for the first time in 2014. During Anumba's 2012 campaign, the Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., native recorded a school-record mark of 56-4.50 (17.18), earning a first-place finish at the ACC Championships. Anumba looks to duplicate the success of 2012 in her final outdoor season at Duke.

The Duke women's multi-event contingent of redshirt sophomores Karli Johonnot and Teddi Maslowski, junior Baily Murphy and senior Miray Seward look to sharpen technique and mechanics in the outdoor season opener, competing in the javelin, 100 hurdles, long jump and shot put. The multi-event contingent will throw the javelin and compete in the 100 hurdles for the first time in 2014.

Senior Curtis Beach, junior Ian Rock and sophomore Robert Rohner also return to competition after successful indoor seasons as multi-event athletes. Beach, Rock and Rohner are prepared to throw the discus for the first time in 2014, while also lining up for the 110-meter hurdles for the first time this year. This weekend's event marks the first competition for Beach since the Albuquerque, N.M., native won the 2014 heptathlon title one week earlier.
