DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke track and field team sends a contingent of competitors to the Joe Hilton Invitational Saturday, April 12, in Chapel Hill, N.C. The meet marks the team's final competition before the conference championship the following weekend.
Numerous field event specialists enter Saturday's competition with the hopes of fine tuning mechanics prior to next weekend's ACC Championship. Senior Tanner Anderson and redshirt junior Michael Krone enter competition Saturday with season-best marks of 6-6.75 (2.00) and 6-10.25 (2.09), respectively. In the women's high jump, three of Duke's heptathletes, including redshirt sophomores Karli Johonnot and Teddi Maslowski and senior Miray Seward join high jumper Maddie Morrow. Johonnot nearly matched her career-best of 5-10.50 (1.79) earlier in the season, clearing 5-10.00 (1.78) at the Texas Relays.
In the pole vault, school-record holder Megan Clark, already with wins in two of her three appearances this season, looks to post a solid mark in her final competition before the championships. Clark's school-record clearance of 14-7.25 (4.45) leads the ACC.
Two throwers, javelin-specialist and redshirt sophomore Thomas Lang and redshirt senior shot-putter Michelle Anumba are both entered in their respective events Saturday, looking to head into the conference championship with unblemished records. Lang recorded a mark of 227-0.00 (69.21) at the Texas Relays, earning the second-farthest mark in school history, while Anumba's season-best distance of 52-7.25 (16.03) came last weekend at the VertKlasse Meeting.
Fellow thrower and redshirt senior Austin Gamble enters Saturday's discus competition following a first-place finish at the VertKlasse Meeting. Gamble won the event with an effort of 185-11.00 (56.66). The mark currently ranks second in the ACC.
On the track, juniors Nate McClafferty and Brian Schoepfer are set to compete in the mile Saturday. McClafferty owns the fourth-fastest 1,500 in the conference this season after clocking a time of 3:45.8, while Schoepfer's season-best time of 3:48.73 sits just outside the top 10.
The Blue Devils open competition Saturday with the women's hammer, slated for 10 a.m.
