DURHAM, N.C. – Head coach Chris Pollard and the Duke baseball program are excited to announce the addition of infielder Daniel Calabretta to the 2015 roster. A native of Matthews, N.C., Calabretta is set to join the Blue Devils this fall.
“Daniel Calabretta is a very athletic middle infielder,” said Pollard. “He is a plus runner that also possesses above average power for his size. Daniel is also a winner. He has been a mainstay on a Weddington team that has won back-to-back state championships. His performance in the state championship game last spring was the stuff of legends. We welcome Daniel to Duke this fall.”
A product of Weddington High School, Calabretta led the Warriors to the 2013 NCHSAA State Championship as a junior, hitting for the cycle in the series finale. Last season, he led Union County with a .427 batting average, 49 runs and 16 doubles, earning All-Southern Carolina Conference, all-state and All-Union County honors.
A deceptively explosive runner, Calabretta has an accurate arm and good lateral agility. A 2013 Perfect Game Underclass Honorable Mention selection, Calabretta is the second-ranked infielder in North Carolina and one of the top 20 second basemen in the country according to the organization.
Calabretta is one of 14 incoming recruits set to arrive in Durham this fall. GoDuke.com will release each of the Blue Devils' 2014 signing class members, so check back for more information on all the future Duke players.
