DURHAM, N.C. – Former Duke standout Ali McCurdy is set to begin her professional volleyball career, joining C.S.M. Satu Mare of Divizia A1, Romania's top professional volleyball league.
“Ali McCurdy has been a special player in Duke volleyball and ACC history,” said Duke head coach Jolene Nagel. “We are so happy for the opportunity she has been given to play professionally in Europe. She is a talented, passionate player who brings the best qualities to any team. We support her efforts to play at a high level and experience different cultures as she continues to play volleyball after a tremendous collegiate career.”
C.S.M. Satu Mare plays in the 12-team Divizia A1. The season runs from mid-October to December before starting again in January and continuing into March. C.S.M. Satu Mare also plays internationally, winning tournaments in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic over the club's history.
“I'm excited and fortunate to take this next step and play at the professional level in Satu Mare, Romania,” McCurdy said. “To play overseas has been a goal of mine, and the opportunity is here. I feel prepared for this new challenge, and I'm thankful for the tools Duke provided both on and off the court to put me in the very best position possible.”
One of the best players to don a Duke uniform, McCurdy led the Blue Devils to two ACC titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances during her distinguished career. The Tampa, Fla., native amassed a school and ACC record 2,538 digs, becoming the 12th player in NCAA history to top the 2,500-dig threshold.
In addition to All-America, all-region and All-ACC honors, McCurdy garnered three ACC Defensive Player of the Year accolades. She is the only player in league history to win an ACC individual honor in three-straight seasons.
McCurdy ended her career with a streak of 59-consecutive matches with 10 or more digs. She is the only Blue Devil to register 500 or more digs all four seasons as well as the only Duke player to average over 5.00 digs per set for a career.
