DURHAM, N.C. – After making it through the non-conference schedule unbeaten, Duke will travel to Miami to take on the Hurricanes in its ACC opener Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Devils produced a 6-2 mark against conference foes in 2013 to earn the Coastal Division championship and a spot in the Dr Pepper ACC Championship Game.
The Blue Devils and Hurricanes have met on the gridiron a total of 11 times, with Miami leading the series, 9-2. Duke came away victorious in the latest meeting, recording the 48-30 win last season in Durham.
The Blue Devils (4-0, 0-0 ACC) concluded the non-conference portion of the year with a 47-13 win over the Tulane Green Wave this past Saturday. The Duke defense capitalized on Tulane's mistakes, picking off a season-high four passes and recording the first fumble recovery of the season. Sophomore cornerback
Bryon Fields and redshirt freshman running back
Joseph Ajeigbe scored on their respective interceptions, with Ajeigbe's coming after a mishandled snap on a punt.
Offensively, Duke established the running game early, racking up 256 rushing yards on 42 carries and four touchdowns. Quarterbacks
Anthony Boone and
Thomas Sirk showed what they could do with their legs, combining for two scores and 136 yards on 15 carries. Senior wide receiver
Jamison Crowder turned in his first 100-yard receiving game of the season, hauling in six passes for 119 yards.
The Miami Hurricanes (2-2, 0-1 ACC), led by head coach Al Golden who is in his fourth year with the program, are coming off a 41-31 loss at Nebraska last Saturday. Carrying the load offensively was junior running back Duke Johnson and true freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya. Johnson notched 93 yards and a score on 18 carries while adding a career-high 84 receiving yards on five receptions. Kaaya threw for 359 yards and three touchdowns but was picked off twice and sacked twice for 25 yards.
The Hurricane defense entered last week's game allowing just 2.0 yards per carry, but the Huskers' read-option attack proved troublesome for Miami. Nebraska running back Ameer Abdullah picked up 230 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, while quarterback Tommy Armstrong, Jr., chipped in 96 yards. Overall, the Huskers ran the ball 54 times for 343 yards, good for a 6.4 average.
In this weekend's matchup, expect the Blue Devils to use a balanced offense to attack the Miami defense. Duke enters the week as one of just seven teams in the nation to average more than 230 passing yards and 260 rushing yards. Boone and Sirk both have the ability to pull the ball and pick up big yards coming around the edge, which will keep Miami's read key honest and potentially allow Duke's stable of running backs a better look inside.
The Duke defense will need to continue its strong play, specifically in the red zone. Allowing an average of 11.5 points per game, the Blue Devils have turned up the pressure inside the 20, holding opposing quarterbacks to a combined -12.46 rating inside the red zone. Miami found success in the red zone last week, scoring four touchdowns and a field goal on five attempts.
The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
