CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Blue Devil multi-event athletes wrapped up the two-day Tobacco Road Cup Saturday night at Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Karli Johonnot took second in the women's pentathlon with 4,022 points, while Teddi Maslowski was in fourth before not competing in the 800m. In the final day of the men's heptathlon, Robert Rohner, competing unattached while redshirting the indoor season, registered 5,168 points to place second. Tanner Johnson and Ian Rock rounded out the scoring for the Blue Devils, totaling 5,093 and 4,468 points to place third and fifth, respectively. Competing in his first multi-event competition, Johnson's point total moved him into the fifth spot on Duke's all-time indoor heptathlon list.
Starting with the 60m hurdles in the women's pentathlon, Maslowski turned in the second-best time, crossing the line in 8.73. Johonnot finished sixth in the event, running a 9.21.
With top performances in the next two events, Johonnot climbed to the top of pentathlon standings. The redshirt junior from Las Vegas, Nev., tied her school record in the high jump with a leap of 5-11.50 (1.82), then registered a mark of 41-2.25 (12.55) in the shot put. Maslowski cleared 5-2.25 (1.58) in the high jump, followed by a throw of 32-3.75 (9.85) in the shot put to take fifth in each event.
Moving on to the long jump, Maslowski finished her day by notching the second-farthest mark. A native of Burgettstown, Pa., Maslowski jumped 18-10.75 (5.76), while Johonnot took fourth with a leap of 17-11.00 (5.46).
Wrapping up the competition with the 800, Johonnot again produced the best mark, crossing the line first in a time of 2:25.44. Johonnot finished behind North Carolina's Xenia Rahn in the final standings, who notched 4,129 points on the day.
“[It was a] great early season meet for Karli,” associate head coach Shawn Wilbourn said. “I'm so proud of how she executed both physically and mentally. I can't wait to see her compete later in the year.”
In the second day of the men's heptathlon, competition started with the 60m hurdles. Johnson was Duke's top finisher, running 8.79 to finish third, followed by Rohner with a time of 9.04.
Leading the Blue Devils in the pole vault was Rock, clearing 16-4.75 (5.00) to tie for the top performance. Johnson and Rohner finished third and fourth, notching marks of 14-5.25 (4.40) and 14-1.25 (4.30), respectively.
In the last event, Johnson ran a 2.47.78 in the 1,000 to lead the pack. Rock crossed the line in third with a time of 2:49.14, while Rohner turned in a 2:53.50 performance.
“I can't say enough great things about the freshman, Tanner Johnson,” Wilbourn said. “In his first combined event competition ever, he moved to No. 5 on our all-time list. The kid knows how to compete and he has a very bright future.”
With the completion of the Tobacco Road Cup, the Blue Devil multi-event athletes are done with competition for the week. The rest of the Duke track and field team is in Blacksburg, Va., competing in the Hokie Invitational today and tomorrow.
